PoliticoSpeaker Nancy Pelosi has another rebellion in her ranks. And theres no easy way to quash it.
House Democrats have repeatedly faced surprise Republican floor attacks since taking control of the chamber, part of a bid by the GOP to target their most vulnerable members and fracture the party. Just six weeks in, the GOP effort has been an astonishing success dividing Pelosi and her top deputies and pitting members of the freshmen class against each other.
At issue is a wonky procedural tactic that Republicans have weaponized to split Democrats on a range of thorny issues, from sexual abuse to anti-terrorism funding. Roughly two dozen Democrats have so far bucked their party and sided with Republicans on the votes, which offer the House minority one last chance to shape legislation on the floor.
As the GOP continues to peel off rank-and-file Democrats, party leaders have grown alarmed and are increasingly engaged in finger-pointing about who is to blame for the disunity and what to do about it, according to interviews with nearly two dozen Democratic lawmakers and aides.
Freshmen Democrats in swing districts say they have no plan to stop voting with the GOP when they feel the need. Theyve even been given the blessing to do so by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), despite resistance from Pelosi.

(7,077 posts)Its an obvious strategy in a place like Staten Island - have a military-industrial candidate (white, male) declare a political pogrom against Nancy Pelosi to scoop up disaffected Republicans.
Covering the opportunism up with a false dilemma of DINO or GOP is a calculated, weaponized, fallacious and deeply anti-Democratic tactic. We will be taking that seat back for a real Democrat.

(25,183 posts)of the seats we flipped in November were ones won by candidates who promised not to be a rubber stamp for Nancy Pelosi. Now, she managed to get back the Speaker's gavel, and they need some room to maneuver for 2020 when Trump will probably be on the ballot.
I'm glad to see Rep. Clyburn give them the space they need to do that. It may look hypocritical for us to knock the GOP for sticking by Trump, even when they know he's 100% wrong, and then fault our Democratic representatives for not being blindly for "unity" for its own sake.

(82,849 posts)Ah, the classics. Sure, Democrats are holding Republicans accountable at last, but some anonymous Democrats who speak only to Politico are "alarmed." Uh huh.
But there's always a ready audience for those hoary old tunes wheezed out by the Mighty Republican Wurlitzer.
