Schiff is commenting on a process that, if went unsaid, would inadvertently move more power to Trump. Schiff is taking away one of Trump's weapons: his presumed spontaneity. Schiff "predicts" Trump's next most obvious move. But now it won't be a surprise when Trump pardons Manafort.
But here's the rub, from a nonlegal perspective: We now know that Manafort holds a bomb of a secret, and that the secret virtually indicts Trump. So if Manafort gets pardoned, the pardon itself can be appealed to the Court on the grounds that the pardon itself was an Obstruction crime. Now we know that Manafort DOES hold a secret that was concealed with his lies, and we now know that the secret incriminates Trump.
One more thing: we also know that a pardoned Manafort no longer has Fifth Amendment protections, so he must cooperate if called as a witness in any subsequent trials or depositions.
