Democrats Defend Omar from GOP Attack By Threatening to Censure King and McCarthy
Democrats are done with the hypocrisy of Republicans on matters of racism and bigotry.
In response to Republicans threatening floor action against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MI), Democrats who already demanded an apology from Omar have moved to protect her by privately suggesting theyd censure Republican Steve king and take action against Republican Kevin McCarthy for his own tweet issue, Washington Post Congressional reporter Rachel Bade wrote on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
Omars apology tour comes as Democratic leaders have floated what amounts to an ultimatum to their GOP colleagues eager to rebuke the freshman Muslim lawmaker. While Republicans said earlier this week that they may force a vote in the full House against Omar such as a privileged resolution disapproving her actions senior House Democrats have suggested they might retaliate, putting Republicans in the equally awkward position of having to reprimand one of their own, including their top leader, Bade explained in her article.

Republicans are not acting in good faith as they weaponize racism against Democrats, which is not only harmful to the political atmosphere, but more broadly harms those they are claiming to be defending by only caring about racism when it can help their power politically so that they can continue to enact policies that harm minorities and continue hate speech that stokes the fires of violence.
Racism is a real problem, but it is certainly not a problem any Republican has a moral standing on. And I mean zero Republicans. They are all enabling this president and their own fellow Republicans who are trying to make white nationalism a normal thing. It is not.

Republicans have not censured King or McCarthy. They do not self-regulate.
Republicans are playing up to Trumps base of poorer white Americans for everything its worth, and without a care about how low they go.
As I keep saying, the one good thing the Trump era has done is given Democrats a spine. They should not back down, since Republicans are not acting in good faith. We are at a sad place in our history when one side is so distorted by power that they dont even care when theyre being hypocrites. Theres no way to debate or have important dialogue with people who dont see the issue as important, but rather only see it as a way to gain power for themselves.

(82,849 posts)Once upon a time, there was a Dilbert comic strip where a female executive told the custodian guy that there was a rat in her office, and she wanted him to get rid of it. Custodian guy guffaws that after all these years of the women's movement, nothing has changed, nothing is different. Executive woman says, "Do it now, or I'll fire your ass." Custodian guy concedes that this part is a little different.
Democrats are changing things up. Republicans will be well served to adapt to the new reality.

(26,045 posts)Do censure resolutions require a supermajority? And, if so, is the unfortunate situation that not a single Republican would join in a censure resolution against King, but many Democrats might cross the aisle to join a unified GOP bloc to censure Omar?

IMHO that also allowed them time to show the public that they were there "to do the people's business" and not just jump right into an egotistical victory lap by levying instant retaliation.
But don't worry - from what we've seen of Madam Speaker so far, she'll have something up her sleeve to handle them.

(58 posts)and I ESPECIALLY don't like the idea that Israel and by extension AIPAC, enjoys blanket immunity from any and all valid criticism by throwing up the "antisemitic" smokescreen. Reminds me of Alan Dershowitz.

(3,256 posts)Ilhan was spot on. Everybody been kissing AIPAC and Adelson's ass for years for the Benjamins. She remains as least as if not more popular in her district. We know how the lunatic Evangelicals and Israeli lobbyists have been perverting our system for years. Its the Benjamins, plain and simple. She wasn't elected by a bunch of ignoramuses from the sticks, but from a vibrant, highly educated populace. I like her more every day. Finally someone is speaking out.
