Former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders neither of whom have declared their candidacies for president yet are the leaders of the pack in the race for the 2020 Democratic nomination, according to the results of a new poll.
A Morning Consult survey released Tuesday of Democrats nationwide and in the first four primary and caucus states also suggests that two declared candidates -- Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts are third and fourth at this early point in the hunt for the Democratic nomination.

Morning Consult interviewed 11,627 registered voters who indicated they may vote in the Democratic primary or caucus in their state. The firm said it will release updated results each week going forward.
According to the results, Biden is at 29 percent among Democrats nationwide. The former vice president is seriously considering running in 2020. So is Sanders, who stands at 22 percent in the survey. The independent senator from Vermont battled eventual nominee Hillary Clinton throughout the 2016 primaries.
Harris polls at 13 percent, with Warren at 8 percent. Former Rep. Beto ORourke of Texas whos considering a White House run stands at 7 percent, with declared candidates Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey at 5 percent and Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota at 3 percent. None of the 12 other candidates or potential contenders listed in the survey topped 2 percent.

(24,122 posts)it BETTER be as a Democrat, or else tRump is a sure winner. I'd never forgive Bernie if he ran as an Independent and guaranteed that prick four more years.

(10,721 posts)He has no shot at the Democratic Party nomination, and even he may recognize that. And there's no way he'll run as a 3rd party candidate.

(24,122 posts)from running for President?!

(10,721 posts)...I don't see why he would run in 2020 beyond taking an ego trip. He has no path to victory. He may not even win New Hampshire. He wouldn't be angling for VP or a cabinet post. And he doesn't need to boost his public profile.

(28,955 posts)I have been a Democrat all my life and will die a Democrat. Anyone who champions the underdog and who has been a powerful leader and even transformer of Democratic policies in recent years, regardless of their exact party affiliation is someone I welcome in the political system in any way I can to give them the ability to do good for the country.

(10,721 posts)Sanders obviously doesn't stand a chance, but he's the 2nd most famous person in the survey. It's all name recognition a full year out from the Iowa caucus.

(7,412 posts)He'll easily jump up to a 40% share once he declares, GO JOE!!

(59,504 posts)However, if he keeps the 29 percent it does make him competitive in Iowa because with so many candidates, many will fall under the 15 percent needed. In the second round he and others will gain their support. If he wins Iowa, his numbers will rise.
However, if someone else wins iowa, he would likely lose support to that person as he may lose frontrunner status.

(7,412 posts)So in this poll if Bernie doesn't run that means Joe is at 35% right now, that's impressive in an already crowded field. All the single digit candidates won't stick around long though, especially if they start getting left out of debates.

(10,721 posts)Bernie fans love Warren but not Harris, even though Harris and Warren have almost identical voting records.

(10,721 posts)...that Biden is somehow among the favorites. This is someone who got just 4% in Iowa in 2008 before dropping out. Someone who didn't even make it to the Iowa caucus in his first attempt due to dropping out after facing multiple allegations of wrongdoing. Someone who is prone to gaffes, has his history with regard to the Thomas-Hill hearing, will be 78 in 2 years, etc., etc.
I suspect that if he runs, people will be reminded why his previous attempts have fallen way short. But he'll certainly make things tougher for others in Iowa and New Hampshire.
It'll be instructive if Bernie fans have a much higher opinion of Biden than they have of Hillary Clinton.
