Updated Feb 3; Posted Feb 3
All 17-year-old Phillip Nix wanted to do was enroll in his rural Alabama school when he moved back from Colorado.
Not so fast, school officials said.
"I was told that I couldn't be accepted because I was 17 years old," Nix said, who spent the first semester of his junior year attending school in Denver.
Nix said he couldn't believe that Alabama county school officials had the right to deny him a public education solely based on his age.

Of those that have set a limit, Alabama is the only state where that age is 17. Three states set the maximum at age 19, eight at age 20, 26 at age 21, five at age 22, and one at age 26.

UNBELIEVABLE story !
AL's finally #1 in something, and it had to be pig-headedness.

(36,470 posts)It's from 2018, but still good. People need to wake up. Corporations should serve The People, not the other way around.

> Lafer explains that in the new system, the children of the wealthy will be taught a broad, rich curriculum in small classes led by experienced teachers. The kind of thing everybody wants for kids. But the majority of Americas children will be consigned to a narrow curriculum delivered in large classes by inexperienced staff or through digital platforms with no teachers at all.
> Most kids will be trained for a life that is more circumscribed, less vibrant, and, quite literally, shorter, than what past generations have known. (Research shows that the lifespan gap between haves and have-nots is large and rapidly growing). They will be groomed for insecure service jobs that dull their minds and depress their spirits. In the words of Noam Chomsky, who recently spoke about education to the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), students will be controlled and disciplined. Most will go to school without developing their creativity or experiencing doing things on their own.
> The New Reality: Two Americas, Not One. Economist Peter Temin, former head of MITs economics department and INET grantee, has written a book, The Vanishing Middle Class, which explains how conditions in America are becoming more like a third-world country for the bulk of its people. He agrees with Lafer that the corporate-driven war on public schools is not just about money, but also about a vision of society...

(1,278 posts)Having said that, there are bright spots in Alabama worth living in:
Lee County - Auburn/Opelika, Auburn University.
Madison County - Huntsville, Madison, etc.
Tuscaloosa County - the University of Alabama ONLY. Not a fan of the Crimson Tide (WDE), but as a university, it's good.
Jefferson County - Birmingham and South Suburbs plus UAB.
The other 63 counties in the state, for the most part, should be avoided.
The Cacalackies where I live now are trying their best to become Alabama; fortunately, Charlotte won't let them, at least on local matters.

(706 posts)I haven't been here through this Valentines Heart thingy so I didn't get any Hearts for myself or to give, but when I posted in this thread someone(s) must have noticed my "heartlessness" LOL, and gave me some. Thank you whomever yall are
So to retaliate, I re-up'd my membership and got some Hearts to give away. When I joined 2 years ago I bought a star for $50 so when it expired I felt I had a little wiggle room before I purchased another one. Giving me the Hearts tonight made me want to do it sooner than later. So not only did you help me, you help me help DU.
Thank you, and sorry for this off topic reply but I wanted to say it here where my heartlessness was first noticed
