We hear a lot about people being too old to run

but I watched the reboot of One Day At A Time featuring the 87 year old Rita Moreno and am now watching the Grammy's featuring 73 year old Dolly Parton. Rita Moreno looked and sounded fantastic on the reboot and Dolly Parton is slaying the Grammys. Tell me again how Elizabeth Warren, Sherrod Brown, Joe Biden, and Bernie Sanders are too old.

1. Two things. I'm saying this as a person 75 years old.

First, there’s a BIG difference between 65 and 75.

Second, it’s one thing to look great and sound great at one event where you and all your staff has been getting you ready for days or weeks. That can be done multiple times, as required.

It’s another thing to have the energy, stamina, focus, and mental sharpness to be on top of everything that comes at you at all hours NONSTOP while running for office for two years and then do the job for four years after that 24/7 with no real down time at all.

Nancy Pelosi is the one person I can think of who is doing something like this at 78. She’s a hero of the Republic. But even she gets to control her time and her appearances far more than a candidate for President or an actual President does.

Plus, the world is changing fast and I’m not sure the elders have really proven themselves, given how things are going.

3. I agree with you 100% enough. Our elder statesmen (and women) can be counsellors and advisors but

the job of Pres needs to go to someone younger.

4. Things have changed, for the better.

I feel everyone is 10 years younger than in previous generations- people in their mid-30s are what people in their mid-20s used to be and so on... hence the greater vitality we see in people in their 70s and 80s.

6. Being a president is a 24/7 job

and cannot have retakes and post production edits.

7. Being POTUS is a tad bit different than being a musical performer.

The average age of the last 5 Democratic presidents was 48 upon taking office. The vast majority of presidents have been 62 or younger upon taking office.

It's a very stressful job, and even healthy people can't avoid some level of mental and physical decline as they get into their 70s and beyond.
