87M Adults Were Uninsured or Underinsured in 2018, Survey Says

Researchers estimate that in 2018, 45 percent of working-age adults, or 87 million people, were either underinsured or had no coverage for at least part of the last year – a share that is essentially unchanged from 2010, despite monumental shifts in health policy during that time.
...
"Inadequate insurance coverage leaves people exposed to high health care costs, and these expenses can quickly turn into medical debt," the report said.

The increase in Americans with leaner health coverage has largely been driven by employer-based plans, not the ACA's individual marketplaces, The Commonwealth Fund found. As health care costs have risen, employers have asked workers to shoulder some of the burden by offering plans with higher deductibles or requiring them to pay a larger share of premiums.

About 42 percent of people with individual health coverage said they were underinsured in 2018, compared with 28 percent of those with job-based coverage, the report found. Yet from 2010 to 2018, the greatest growth in the underinsured rate was among adults with employer-based plans.

What does not work is the current US system of "profitized" health care.

Fact is we never had the votes for it back then. Also it was tried in two states and was found to costly.

Why the hell do some think that we can throw a pass from the end zone and it will sail over the home goal effortlessly. A person has to catch that ball and run. There are many obstacles in the way. Fouls, tackles with an entire opposing team piling on. Flags thrown and the ones carrying that ball are set back yards only to try to make it to the goal once again. Okay...I am not into football and am sure I got much of that wrong. However, first of all it takes a team...THE WHOLE TEAM to make that happen. Sadly to many hated the ACA and refused to help the black man that tried relentlessly to make it happen. Fact is he insured many more Americans than ever before...fact is that just was not good enough for many.

Fact is that it was a stepping stone to build on. The ACA held promise for so many and it could have been worked on and improved. I think we could have actually made it to a single payer with dedication. To many just wanted to tear it all down and start from scratch. We blew it.

Single payer in Canada started in 1 province, and it was so successful that the other provinces quickly adopted it. But in Canada, there are only 10 provinces, and 3 territories, so the process was far simpler.

Yes, the ACA was a start. But most seniors are happy with Medicare, and there is no reason that it cannot be expanded and the designed flaws in it can be fixed.

All we need is the political will to do so. And the medical industry contributes huge sums to keep things the way that they are.

And kill as many Americans as they could.

I think one day we will be googling the words 'pure evil' and the GOP will be the name that pops up first.

This year he lost it. He couldn't afford it anymore thanks to Trump's sabotage.

He is back to using the ER as his only source of healthcare, since they have to take him if he is sick enough.

I got a very affordable plan with ACA. Twice I got refunds since the law states an insurance company has to use I think it was 80% on care and 20% on other. Twice, a $200 refund.

I am so sorry that your brother has lost his affordable insurance, SunSeeker. We need another huge blue wave in 2020 to alter this course.

He worked as a maintenance man so he didn't make a lot.

He got hit on his motorcycle. Shredded his lower right leg. He had 3 operations in a week. New bike and didn't have insurance on it yet. Couldn't put any weight down for 3 months. Can't work.

Now he owes thousands and has no way to pay. I guess he can take medical bankruptcy. His leg will never be right.

Dumb. But when you can't afford insurance you take your chances.
