Just get a few accusers and wait for the ensuing clamor for him to step down. Seriously, I have no idea about Fairfax accusers but it seems like a rather handy way to get rid you political opponents. They dont even have to lift a finger. Well do their work for them. Look for more of this in the future. Shouldnt there at least be an investigation? Didnt they recently try to do this to Mueller? It was rather clumsy and fell apart quickly but werent they recruiting women to come forward for money?

(10,491 posts)I'm serious. I'm not saying one of those, I was a waitress at a fundraiser and her raped me in a bathroom Jacob Wohl-type accusations. I mean, a credible one. One that went to school with him. Or one where they both agree they were alone in a hotel room together.
You're basically asking someone to commit multiple felonies for you.

(90,347 posts)... KGOP are amoral, reacting off accusations alone (which I don't think was the point of #metoo) doesn't seem like the right thing to do.

(35,320 posts)On the other hand, I think it's a lot easier to anonymously accuse a public figure of rape and hope that the anonymous story gets picked up and spread around in a way that hurts the public figure and leaves the anonymous accuser untouched.
That was the original plan last summer with Blasey Ford. There were exchanges that were confidential, including having a lie-detector test run, to bolster the claims, but anonymous wasn't enough. Once there's one person making the accusation, others more easily come forward. Including, last summer, some that weren't all that credible.
Tyson talked to the WaPo a while back; and while WaPo noted "red flags" that said there *might* be something there, it was far some the level of confidence they needed to take on a politician that I suspect the editors and reporters (would have) supported. But the accusation went public. And once there's one person making the accusation, others more easily come forward.
This isn't an argument for claims that Tyson has to be a GOP operative or enticed to make her claims by the GOP. It does lower the threshold for the discomfort that would amplify any self-doubt over claims, however.

(10,491 posts)I mean people at DU would accept it if it were a Republican. And Freepers would accept it if it were a Democrat. At least some on both sides would.
But 95 percent of the public would know that's nonsense.
The amazing thing about the accusations against public figures in recent years is that these are coming from women respected in their fields and communities who can tie themselves to the person and are accusing them at great sacrifice.
To think that "Women in Reno accuses Senator of rape" is going to compare to that is a stretch.

(12,344 posts)First you have find someone whom he did meet or he plausibly could have met. Then this person would have to hate him enough to destroy him and brave enough to take on the criticism and shaming that goes with being a rape victim. Then you have to develop a scenario that puts them together in a private situation where no witness could place either of them somewhere else. Then this person would have be a convincing liar and willing to play the role up to and including perjury or a slander lawsuit. Then you'd have give her untraceable money or other incentive. And this conniving greedy liar better somehow have a sterling reputation, because you can't have her aquaintances say - oh that person is a total liar, don't believe her. Then you'd have to trust this conniving greedy liar with the sterling reputation not to betray you. And you'd need at least two such people, because one woman is not going to be believed.
Which is basically why the Mueller plot fell apart so easily. There was also an attempt against George Takei with someone he actually did have sex with and that fell apart too.

(31,261 posts)And after seeing another woman make a similar claim 18 or 19 years later against the same man, somehow that is a setup?
Maybe President Obama's mom got a Hawaaian birth certificate for him from Kenya, guessing that one day he would run for US President
The time factor and the disclosure that the second woman told friend in 2000 sort of blows up a conspiracy theory.

(10,721 posts)...there are credible accusations and then there are political stunts. The former must be taken very seriously. There should be an investigation. In the meantime, should Fairfax step down? I don't know, but he's clearly in a lot of trouble.

(10,721 posts)There probably won't be any hard evidence in cases like these. And proper investigations take time. Meanwhile, there is mounting pressure on Fairfax to step down.

(7,412 posts)No one has made a criminal complaint against him for law enforcement to get involved. If he gets impeached there will be testimony and probably some degree of investigation I imagine.

(7,412 posts)The Virginia Black Caucus has demanded he resign and he will be impeached if he doesn't unless something drastic happens. Simple fact is he just isn't important enough to merit this level of imagined conspiracy against him. Twitter rumors now are there are a few more women that have come forward to the media, I would bet he has another publicly identified accuser by Sunday evening and resigns Monday.
