RIP John Dingell

We lost another giant last night.

My daughter wrote this on FB:

Our nation has lost a giant. He was the longest serving member of Congress is our nation's history -- since the very office of Congressman itself was created. If there was ever an argument against term limits it was this man. He served honorably and even after all that time in Congress he still cared deeply about and represented his district. He will always be the Chairman of Energy and Commerce to me because I was lucky enough to live in DC when he was there. My mom worked for his committee when I was a little kid and I remember meeting Dingell, I remember sitting in the chairman's chair after everyone had left and my mom let me in the committee room. I remember and have taken to heart all my life the love this man had for the Congress and our nation. His belief in the ability of our legislative branch to be great and do great things is something I still hold dearly. He voted for the Civil Rights Act, helped pass Medicare, Medicaid, the Endangered Species Act, Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. He introduced a health care bill every single session of congress until it actually passed under President Obama -- just as his father had, every session of Congress since 1933. I can't wait to finish reading his book (you should, too), and I hope his belief in our government will live on. He was disgusted by the people who have come into congress who clearly hate the offices they hold. He knew we are better than them. We have lots of terrible things in our history and we have a lot of terrible things going on today --- but we can be better. This man lived long enough to see and help us become better several times. I so dearly hope his spirit lives on and we can continue to fight through all the terrible things we face to move forward and become better. RIP, Mr Chairman. You were a legend and an inspiration. Thank you <3

Below is a picture taken on the night Clean Air finally got through conference Committee. Melodie worked hard on that committee. I didn't see her for almost a week. She would rush in , change clothes, and rush back to the hill. JD worked for Michigan and for the US - and for us- for my whole life. He became Congressman the year I was born.

I agree with Abby, if anything argues against term limits, it is his life.

On a lighter note, Melodie slept through the beginning of the Whitaker hearing this morning. I was describing the first round of questioning to her ... she wasn't fully awake yet. when I said that Whitfucker told Nadler that his 5 minutes were up she yelled "Oh my fucking God!!!" and I have never seen her eyes get that big.

I don't know exactly how John Dingell would have responded to that (though I can imagine) ... but I would love to have seen it.
