VA Senate majority leader(R) was 68 editor of VMI yearbook filled with blackface, racialslurs etc

Recent story on rawstory.

VA a real mess in past. They really seem to be improving over the last few years.

We whites in all parts of US need to take a clear-eyed view of our past.

At least today--if we want to--we can hear blacks telling us honestly about their experiences.

I grew up in segregated OK and went to a segregated college in TX. I never talked on relatively equal terms with a black person until I had a black colleague in grad school. The 1st time I actually had something close to a possible black friend was when as a young mother in the eatly 70s I got to know a young black mother living in the same neighborhood.

She told me about how she was followed when she went shopping in our small IA college town. That was the 1st time I learned that blacks had to put up with such things. It really hit me how insulated I had been!
