Advice for Young Political Workers and Other Event Attendees

Don't do one-nighters with anyone. That's not easy, because there are plenty of opportunities in the fast-moving, emotion-laden environment of political campaigns, or even business gatherings and trade shows. It can be mighty tempting to hook up with someone who shares your interests or dedication to some cause. But, beware:

It's not worth it. It's especially risky if you've been drinking or the person you're considering for such a one-nighter has been drinking, but it's risky even without that.

All too often, the next morning, there are regrets. All too often, the next morning, there are guilty feelings about cheating on another relationship. All too often, long after that night, those regrets and guilt can turn into something else and cause you harm.

This is not advice for just one sex or gender. It's general advice.

At the end of the evening, go back to your hotel - alone. Get a good night's sleep and start a new day tomorrow. You'll never have guilt over doing that, and you'll never cause regrets for anyone.

I didn't always follow my own advice as a younger person. Fortunately, no seriously bad consequences ensued. But, they might have.

Just saying...

We'll be hashing out their old Tinder profile pictures and Snap chats from when they were teenagers and in college.

Worst of all, sometimes, real, lasting relationships come out of such random encounters. I've been married to someone for 27 years who I met at a trade show. We had one of those one-nighters, but it turned into something far more meaningful. But, that's rarely the case, as I can attest. More often, it works out far less well, as I can also attest.

Regrets over one-night stands are far more common than great memories.
