The Legislature could force an election for the LT governor''s seat this year Per Vox's analysis. Democrats need to stop this shit ASAP. The GOP are attempting to overturn an election based on at best a 35 year old picture used against Northam and a sexual assault accusation leveled against Fairfax which the Washing Post decided was not credible. We better put an end to this shit now. Below is a couple of links to this story.

(68,667 posts)call an election this year. This is dirty politics by Breitbart in combination with white supremacists....we need to stop allowing them to cause this sort of shit. Will update
A special election to replace Fairfax as lieutenant governor could be called, though it is not guaranteed. Fairfax may appoint his own replacement, Sabato said, but the state legislature could mandate that a special lieutenant governor election be held in November, when many of the state legislative seats are on the ballot.

(4,492 posts)Just curious-- would a special election take place this year (Virginia's entire legislature is on the ballot in November so it wouldn't be hard to do).
Demsrule86
(68,667 posts)for the LT governor this year (legislative body), they could then trump up worse allegations about FAirfax and force him out and then possibly a GOP who is elected in the special would be governor...what have the Republicans got to lose?
peggysue2
(10,839 posts)Would Herring step in in the event that Justin Fairfax was pushed out? Or would the President ProTempore, Steven Newman (R), take over? I've read some states have differing rules on successor lineups. Whatever the case, the 'who' stepping in until a special election is held would be . . . of special significance.
And do I expect Republicans to be on the up and up? Hell, NO!
Demsrule86
(68,667 posts)Fairfax out...and thus a new LT governor ...GOP would become governor...sure they might not win such an election, but what have they got to lose...no matter what they are creating chaos in an election year that will determine the legislature and the Senate in
Virginia. They can force an election for LT governor this year according to multiple sources. The one I read was Vox.

(10,839 posts)Republicans were scorched in the last election and are looking for retribution, anyway, anyhow, anything to boost their chances in 2020. This is information warfare leveled against Democrats and where are the biggest cache of voters that could turn an election? The African American community and women who are traditional Democratic voters.
There's a plan afoot and it ain't pretty.

(12,344 posts)I think Fairfax will survive an I am not that worried about losing a special election if Northam leaves. Virginia is close to be a blue a state and this is a desperate gamble to hang on to power.

Big League Politics was founded by ex-Breitbart staffers who thought the site was too mainstream.
Big League Politics was founded in 2017 by a group of former Breitbart Newsstaffers, who decided that the nationalist media outlet previously run by Steve Bannon had gotten too mainstream. BLP started as the media arm of a pro-Trump, populist nationalist political action committee, which bills itself as the attack dogs for the American First Agenda. The site is now owned by North Carolina political consultant Reilly ONeal, who worked for Roy Moore, the Alabama Senate candidate whose run was derailed by child molestation charges, and Corey Stewart, a Republican from Virginia popular with white supremacists for his support of Confederate monuments. Last year, Stewart unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and the site covered his race extensively.
The man who first posted the Northam yearbook photo is BLP editor-in-chief Patrick Howley, a former reporter and provocateur for Breitbart and Tucker Carlsons Daily Caller. Howley has made news in the past, but for more (sic) ignoble reasons. In 2014, he and Carlson were forced to apologize to reporter Rosie Gray, then at BuzzFeed, after Howley tweeted a pair of gross, sexist comments about her. Breitbart also suspended Howley in 2016 after he publicly questioned whether one of his co-workers had lied when she said shed been manhandled by Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski at a press event.

The allegation was first posted by Big League Politics, the same political blog that published the now-infamous yearbook photo showing someone in blackface and someone in a KKK costume, from Northam's 1984 yearbook page. ,,,,
The blog, in the post that prompted Fairfax's denial, claimed that a fellow at Stanford University said a man sexually assaulted her at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, Mass.
Imagine you were sexually assaulted during the DNC Convention in Boston in 2004 by a campaign staffer. You spend the next 13 years trying to forget it ever happened. Until one day you find out hes the Democratic candidate for statewide office in a state some 3000 miles away, and he wins that election in November 2017, a post from the reported accuser said, according to the blog. Then, by strange, horrible luck, it seems increasingly likely that hell get a VERY BIG promotion. .
The (Washington) Post carefully investigated the claim for several months, Fairfaxs office said in a statement. After being presented with facts consistent with the Lt. Governors denial of the allegation, the absence of any evidence corroborating the allegation, and significant red flags and inconsistencies within the allegation, the Post made the considered decision not to publish the story. ....

(999 posts)A federal court recently ruled in favor of a redistricting plan that would favor Democrats in Virginia. The house is 2 votes away from being under Democratic control. The cenus will occur with a Democrat in the Governor's office for the first time in 30 years. I cannot defend Northams actions and the Fairfax incident is clearly a case of he said she said. What the Republican operatives are counting on is the pack mentality of people like Gillibrand. Harris and AOC to quickly condemn Fairfax and either damage his reputation or get him to resign. I do not believe in conspiracy theories so this is a planned and calculated attack by the far right. As a lifelong Virginian this is very frightening.
