Oklahoma high school valedictorian denied diploma for using 'hell' in speech

Just saw this on the news. Is Texas still the most backward-ass state in the union, or do we have a new champion?

PRAGUE, Okla. – An Oklahoma high school valedictorian who was denied her diploma because she used the world “hell” in her commencement speech doesn’t plan to apologize for her choice of words, her father says.

David Nootbaar said he is furious that Prague High School is withholding his daughter Kaitlin's diploma because of her use of the word during the graduation speech in May. “She has worked so hard to stay at the top of her class and this is not right,” he said. “She earned that diploma. In four years she has never made a B. She got straight A’s and had a 4.0 the whole way through."

School officials declined to comment. "This matter is confidential and we cannot publicly say anything about it," Prague schools Superintendent Rick Martin said in a statement to KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City.

Get an attorney -- no wait, get two attorneys -- and SUE THE LIVING SHIT out of the school district. Please do not settle out of court. Sue them until you bankrupt the school district. And then maybe the Prague School District will think twice about hiring an educational nazi for Superintendent.

Congratulations to your daughter. Trust me, the school district CANNOT withhold her diploma because they did not like her speech. If she met all of the requirements for graduation, and if she was designated Valedictorian, I guarantee she fulfilled all requirements for graduation, they MUST grant her the diploma THAT SHE EARNED.

The minute you show up to the Prague School District with shark attorneys in tow, they'll beg you to accept the diploma.

...and the best part is that the ceremony is not REQUIRED. It's considered an extracurricular activity. They have no legal basis to hold her diploma, but we're a local controlled state. She is not going to intervene. Damn small government Republican snot bucket.

It does not matter if the small-minded authorities liked her speech or not. The diploma is hers. Seriously, a well-picked attorney or two would have these simpletons shitting bricks in no time. The Nootbars should sue for damages and legal fees, for a start.

at Oklahoma State in a month or so, but without a diploma she could really be screwed by red tape and bureaucracy. Nobody's saying who was behind this-- the superintendent, the principal, the school board, a jealous parent...

Whoever it was, I gotta ask why there are assholes charged with educating our kids?

graduation prayers by having students lead them and then punish other student graduation speakers for "blasphemy". Either you have free speech or you don't.
