A Bellevue man's knees buckled and he had to be helped to a chair after he was sentenced to prison Monday for his seventh drunken driving conviction.

Sean A. Diesen, 42, began to visibly shake as Sarpy County District Judge David K. Arterburn handed down a sentence of 3½ to 10 years in prison for driving while intoxicated on April 27. The judge also ordered Diesen to pay a $2,000 fine and revoked his driver's license for 15 years.

Diesen, who could have received up to 20 years in prison, had a blood-alcohol level of .099 when he was arrested by a Sarpy County sheriff's deputy near U.S. Highway 75 and Nebraska Highway 370. A person is considered to be driving drunk when he has a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher.

Defense attorney John Hascall asked the judge to sentence Diesen to probation because he is needed at home to help an ailing family member physically and financially. Hascall also noted that Diesen had successfully completed probation in another case and said he “does well in a structured situation.”
