The U.S. Postal Service has suspended service Wednesday to the entire state of Michigan due to bitter cold temperatures.
The delivery suspension comes in wake of a polar vortex sweeping the Midwest. Temperatures in Michigan dropped below zero Wednesday morning. A wind chill warning issued by the National Weather Service is predicting temperatures as low as 45 degrees below zero in some areas.

There is no update as to when deliveries will resume.

At 11:40 a.m., here in Lansing it's a balmy -3 with a wind chill of -25. In Jackson, about 40 miles to our southeast, it's -10 with a wind chill of -38. We're actually getting some moderating from the lake effect snow coming off of Lake Michigan.

(115,875 posts)I don't remember that ever happening before, even though it's been this cold and worse before - we used to get stretches of extreme cold almost every winter up until maybe 20-25 years ago. Maybe their mail trucks are too old and decrepit now to handle the cold.

(146,336 posts)there was no mail delivery. It's a first, as far as I know, on such a widespread basis. I have no problem with it. I don't want mail carriers out walking their routes. Too dangerous.

(115,875 posts)just so I can get catalogs, pizza coupons and ads for hearing aids. But this really is unusual; I've lived here all my life and even when it was just as cold (almost every winter), we always got mail. I did get the newspaper, but judging from where it landed - halfway down the walk to the street, not on the porch - I'm guessing they just tossed it from their car. That's OK, too.
I filled the bird feeders yesterday. I don't know how those little buggers manage, but they do. They're on the feeders, chowing away, all fluffed up.

(146,336 posts)this week. Not today, though. Bummer!
Still, I feel for the mail carriers. We're on a walking route in our residential neighborhood. It's too cold. I just went down and retrieved the wheely bin for our garbage. The trash pickup was right on schedule. I didn't even want to do that. Fortunately the trash truck has an automated arm that reaches out for the bin, so I assume the driver is warm in the truck's cab.
The bird species who overwinter here have evolved to be able to stand these temperatures, I guess. They're smart enough, though, to spend the night in the bushes near our house, so there's some warmth that escapes from indoors to help them. We put their food under the bushes, too. They aren't visiting the feeder right now.
The suet blocks, though, are a big hit. A little fat goes a long way toward producing internal heat, I think.
