My Husband was diagnosed with softening of the spine (myelomalacia)

He had a neck compression that was causing bleeding...this disease is a death sentence if not caught early. I am happy to say he had surgery last Wednesday in time and it was very successful. He will need an additional surgery on his lower back at some point (unrelated). But he will live. I have been in and out as I spent the last two weeks in the hospital...he had to wait for the surgery there because had his compression worsened he would have been paralyzed from the neck down. He had fallen several times already where he would lose all feeling in his legs. I have to say I was terrified. I started to write this even before the surgery but putting it on the computer made it seem more real somehow. Today was a good day. He was able to walk to the bathroom...ah the little things we take for granted.

He is itchy and already stir crazy...at least 3-4 weeks...before he can go back to work. The pain isn't too bad and he has good pain drugs.

Hope you have access to a swimming pool with all the accessories. That will help strengthen his muscles (when he's allowed to) without too much stress on his back.

looking so bad....that I just told him we are going to the ER...we already knew he needed surgery just not how bad it was. They kept him until surgery could be arranged at Cleveland Clinic. We are blessed to live in a city with such a great hospital.

I know about taking little things for granted - around the same time, I took on black ice and gravity. Needless to say, they won. I get to take my first full shower in 2 weeks today (post surgery for a spiral fracture of the tibia). Definitely grateful for the little things we take for granted. If you are at the Cleveland Clinic, we may have crossed paths yesterday - I was there all day for my daughter.

Best of luck to you and your husband.

And he walked to the bathroom for the first time in the rest of his life.

Yet more proof that the old concept of insurance only for often unstoppable medical disasters is obsolete. In this era, we need to safeguard and maintain our health.

Will he be able to get all mobility back! Is he cured?

If he’s a movie buff he can tolerate the enforced down time. Netflix, Hulu, curiositystream.com have tons of movies, tv shows to binge on and documentaries. All very cheap!
