Deepest Freeze in a Generation to Hit 55 Million Americans

You might want to pick out an extra layer or seven over the next few days. A deep freeze, which could be the coldest in a generation, is due to hit 55 million Americans. The air will be so cold that the National Weather Service in Des Moines, Iowa, has warned that, if people go outside, they should “avoid taking deep breaths, and minimize talking.” It's predicted that Wednesday could be the coldest day ever recorded in Chicago—its all-time coldest temperature record currently stands at 27 degrees below zero, according to USA Today. Wind chills as low as 55 below zero are likely in the city, and some areas in the northern Plains could see wind chills of 64 degrees below zero. The cold won't be quite as bad on the East Coast. Lows Wednesday night will reach 6 degrees in New York, 7 degrees in Philadelphia, and 9 degrees in Washington DC. AccuWeather meteorologist Mike Doll said: “I cannot stress how dangerously cold it will be... An entire generation has gone by without experiencing this type of cold.”

I can handle the cold much better if it just stays cold a while and not all that up and down!

It's the lack of sun that is getting to me! Don't know where you are, I am about 20 minutes from St. Louis and in the past two weeks it feels like we have seen the sun for a total of 6 hours!!

the high temperature never got above zero for the whole month of February. This is in central Pa. No one got sick because it was too cold for germs to survive.

My 2 stray cats will be holed up in their heated cat houses in my unheated garage.

Seriously though, this will be bad, but the good thing is that it is only going to last a couple of days.

Dealing with about a foot and a half of snow in the last storm, then a heavy rain. Barn flooded and transformed into a skating rink. Folks going around in snowmobiles, farm tractors, whatever works. Loggers creeping down my hill because there is a lot of ice. Thank goodness for friendly neighbors stopping in with gifts of driveway sand.

It’s really beautiful, but really cold.

But, cheer up, we're heading into February and there's a faint light at the end of the icy tunnel. Think spring.

It was deep cold. An American was visiting the city and started to run towards a building to get out of the cold. A cops stopped him and told him it was illegal to run when the temp was severely low. Inhaling will cause your lungs to freeze.

That relates to the advice in the o.p., not to breathe deeply

Temperatures the next two days are dipping into day lows of -12 to -19 degrees and night time lows of -34 degrees. Almost every public and private school and college in the state have been cancelled for today and tomorrow due to the wind chill advisories that will be -30 to -50 degrees. Now that is COLD!

DonKeyquotey gets it wrong.

He keeps tilting at things he knows nothing about. In those windmills in his mind he uses a toothpick for a lance.

Global Warming needs to be re-added to the mainstream (with definitions for the conservative impaired!). Frank Luntz (asshole emeritus) coined that word to make it sound less devastating...as with many others he created.

Less ticks this spring and summer. The lack of long lasting deep cold snaps in past winters has led to an increase in ticks around here.(Michigan) Here’s hoping this cold will kill off some of the vermin that supports them.

that can't afford proper heating. Some homeless, sick and elderly folks will die from exposure.....

Just as bad, improper use of space heaters invariably results in house fires and death......

Aside from those hazards, one of the worst problems is frozen water pipes. Here in north central Kentucky, pipes are buried only 3-to-4 ft. deep and the ground can freeze in spots quickly with temperatures and winds they're predicting tonight. Mine has frozen at the meter pit near the street, so I started placing a plastic garbage can lid over it with some bricks to retain it and that has worked. However, we still keep water dripping anytime we have weather like tonight will bring.

A bunch of weak car batteries will bite the dust, too.
