YouTube launches plan to limit the visibility of conspiracy theory videos

According to YouTube, nearly two billion users log in to the site every month to watch videos and more than a billion hours of video are consumed there every day. But while the sheer variety of content practically makes this service the eighth wonder of the world, the potential size of a content creator's audience also means that YouTube (download for iOS or Android) needs to police those creators to make sure they aren't misbehaving.

Toward that end, YouTube announced today that it's taking aim at videos that promote fringe conspiracy theories -- but it's not removing them altogether. At least not yet. Instead, you'll just see fewer recommendations for that type of content.

The blog post says, "[W]e'll begin reducing recommendations of borderline content and content that could misinform users in harmful ways -- such as videos promoting a phony miracle cure for a serious illness, claiming the earth is flat, or making blatantly false claims about historic events like 9/11."

The company adds, "This change relies on a combination of machine learning and real people. We work with human evaluators and experts from all over the United States to help train the machine learning systems that generate recommendations. These evaluators are trained using public guidelines and provide critical input on the quality of a video."

How 'bout deleting. Same with fake news.

YouTube and the other social media sites are making billions upon billions of dollars. It's time they use some of that money to undo the damage they have helped cause and prevent more damage in the future, in the US and worldwide.
