Howard Schultz is just a younger Alan Simpson: Supports cuts to Social Security & Medicare

Howard Schultz Supports Cuts To Social Security And Medicare

Schultz may run for president on a platform of austerity similar to that of Ben Sasse and Paul Ryan.

There has been some angst on the part of some prominent Democrats regarding a potential Howard Schultz campaign for president. For those of you who have never heard of him, Schultz is the former CEO of Starbucks. Apparently, he is considering a third party run for president.

Schultz’s priorities and rhetoric tells me he isn’t a true Democrat. As a matter of fact he is running on a platform of austerity that is similar to positions held by Ben Sasse and Paul Ryan.

Like Ryan and Sasse, Schultz believes that the national debt should be the nation’s highest priority. Not inequality, flat wages, rising health care costs or global warming. Schultz has said he wants to “target” what he terms as “entitlements” for budget cuts. In other words, this billionaire business man wants to cut Social Security and Medicare.

should he decide to run, a platform like this will reduce his appeal to Democratic voters while opening a way for "fiscally responsible" conservatives to support someone other than Agent Orange.

looks like he's more Perot than Nader.

There have been and I'm sure there still are democrats who supported what used to be called "the grand bargain" which was basically an agreement to start cutting social security and/or Medicare. I am not going to get into it here as to which democrats in the past were open to that idea, but there were some who were open to this. In the past there were discussions about lessening and eliminating social security for people who were not already receiving it. There is plenty of money to be made by Wall Street if regular people have no other option for having a retirement income. I hope the democratic candidates for president focus on the fact that republicans want to cut "entitlements" and that democrats make it clear that entitlements mean social security and medicare. I am very wary of democrats who court Wall Street because of the threat to Social Security and Medicare and I believe we all should be.

We need:

Medicare for All or
Single Payer
At LEAST restoring and protecting full funding for ACA as a FIRST step (immediate, then go for SP or M4A)
And NO cuts to social security. Instead, institute taxes and surtaxes on the very wealthy as well as raising the damn cap above which those who make more don't pay in.

Underpay his employees during their entire work life, making sure they don't have any extra to retire on, and then as they reach retirement age, whisk away the programs that provide even a minimal subsistence floor.

Because billionaires gots to get paid again.
