South Carolina group can deny gay couples as foster parents

The federal government agreed Wednesday to allow federally funded foster care agencies in South Carolina to deny services to same-sex or non-Christian couples.

The waiver issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will allow Greenville’s Miracle Hill Ministries to continue as a state-supported foster care agency.

As part of the waiver’s requirements, any family that Miracle Hill does not allow to take care of foster children must be referred to other agencies or the state Department of Social Services.

The exemption was needed because a regulation from President Barack Obama’s administration prevents publicly licensed and funded foster care agencies from serving specific religions.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster asked for the waiver. He said President Donald Trump deserved credit for making sure South Carolina keeps as many groups as it can to help place foster children. The waiver request said Miracle Hill Ministries is responsible for up to 15 percent of foster care placements in the state.

Christian couples won't be able to obtain services in fostering children in South Carolina. Nice! (sarcasm here is dripping with scorn)...the sad fact of the matter that children are placed up for adoption for many sad reasons...parents of the child/children die, the child/children are not wanted, etc. Too many sad reasons, all terrible for the child/children involved.

My other half, when they were 11 years old, was given up for foster care because the father and mother were
divorcing and neither of them wanted the responsibility of the kids afterwards. Still bitter to this day. I can see why there is bitterness, lots of it. It's a very hard thing for any kid to go through.

The main point, don't we want as many possible viable candidates for foster parents as possible? It is, after all, for the foster kids, not the bigots who are running the agency.
