US states that voted for Trump most vulnerable to job automation

States whose populations backed Donald Trump in 2016 are the most heavily exposed to future job market changes wrought by automation, according to a new report analysing the parts of the US labour force that could see the deepest disruption from advancing technology.

The study from the Brookings Institution finds that about 25 per cent of US employment, or 36m jobs, will face a “high” exposure to automation because of the nature of the tasks involved. “Heartland” states including Indiana, Kentucky and Iowa with significant manufacturing or agricultural sectors could see some of the biggest changes.

“Some of the highest exposures are in the heartland and Trump country,” said Mark Muro, a senior fellow at Brookings. The report, he added, does not foresee “dystopian” levels of disruption to the US population from automation, but the impact will be highly uneven.

Among the top half of states that the Brookings study finds to be most vulnerable to automation, only two voted for Hillary Clinton in the last US presidential election.
