Nurse arrested in case of incapacitated woman who gave birth

A 36-year-old licensed practical nurse at Hacienda Healthcare was arrested on a sexual assault charge after a patient with significant intellectual disabilities gave birth at the Phoenix facility.

Phoenix, AZ, Police Chief Jeri Williams said police believe the suspect, identified as Nathan Sutherland, is responsible for sexually assaulting the woman who gave birth on Dec. 29.

On Jan. 8, Phoenix police served a search warrant for the DNA of male Hacienda Healthcare employees. Police said a match was discovered between Sutherland and the baby Tuesday.

Police said Sutherland is a licensed practical nurse who has worked at Hacienda Healthcare since 2011 and was employed there as of Tuesday. According to police, he was responsible for providing care for the woman during the time she was sexually assaulted.

Sutherland was taken into custody Tuesday evening and booked on one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse.

I understand you’re trying to make a point, but that’s unbelievably inappropriate, not to mention heartless.

Have you ever seen a profoundly retarded person ( no alerts needed, this is the correct term)? I have. You wouldn’t make such an ugly joke if you’d ever worked with or known them.

If you want to comment on the cowardly Covcath cretins, do it on one of those threads.

Ugh.

I also have a niece who has downs syndrome and you mentioning that she is profoundly retarded is just as insensitive, and heartless.

She is constantly referred to by others as retarded.

Or all the other humans who have Down Syndrome, I bet a lot of them experience being called retarded.

Thank you for such a teachable moment about Down Syndrome it was well worth it.

People who are profoundly retarded cannot care for themselves in any way. They are usually institutionalized, as this woman is.

People with Down Syndrome are very capable, despite the challenges they face. Many work, they workout (two such folks belong to my gym), they go out to eat, belong to teams and basically are just able to enjoy life as others do.

I’m sorry that your niece is exposed to the type people who would call her names. In the communities where I have worked or volunteered with those with developmental disabilities, they are usually accepted, most often welcomed wherever they go.

That’s a damn shame that your niece is “constantly” called names. Something is very wrong there.

We have patients on our practice who function at a very high level, and some who, sadly, cannot even dress themselves or take care of basic hygiene needs.

Hospitalized at the age of one month; never got "better" but lived to the ripe age of 18.

I can't imagine the kind of depravity it would take to do this. She was pretty (we kept her hair clean and her teeth brushed and took photos).

I just can't wrap my mind around this.

She has significant intellectual disabilities as a result of seizures very early in her childhood,” the family’s attorney, John Micheaels, said in a statement. “She does not speak but has some ability to move her limbs, head and neck. Their daughter responds to sound and is able to make facial gestures.

So she has a family? It makes me think that the home went out of its way to cover up the pregnancy.
