He's a terrible poker player. Nancy knew exactly how much the SOTU means to him where he gets to read a prepared speech and look like a civilized human being for a couple hours. It's probably the 1 even he most looks forward to. If he were smart, when she suggested delaying it, he could have played along and put the ball back in her court issuing a statement like, "Nancy has a point, maybe it should be delayed, but let me do something, let me make the speech a plea for both sides to work together, blah blah blah..." He could have easily played it so either he got his speech, or if he didn't he could have played it like he agrees not to give it. Now he looks weak because he is weak.
