"Mexico will pay for it"

This is one of two points that stands out to me with the shutdown.

1) "Mexico will pay for it" - repeated ad nauseum for the last few years. WP has a good montage here for background if you can stomach it:



and

2) "I am proud to shutdown the government for border security." Make that guy own it. More video here if you can also stomach it (so disrespectful to Nancy & Chuck).

And beyond their lies being toxic is that so many of the electorate are susceptible to those sound-byte lies without asking any meaningful questions about them (e.g., why, how, how much, when, what does it really mean for me, etc.).
