Hearing is set for Monday over end to Saints loss to Rams
New Orleans businessman rents billboards critical of NFL
In the legal equivalent of a Hail Mary pass, two New Orleans Saints season ticket holders have asked a judge to reverse the result of the NFC championship game that sent the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl, or order a replay.
Tuesdays state court filing says the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, should implement a league rule governing extraordinarily unfair acts.
Rule 17, Section 2, Article 1, of the NFL guidelines state that the commissioner has the sole authority to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary and/or corrective measures if any club action, non-participant interference, or calamity occurs in an NFL game which the Commissioner deems so extraordinarily unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of the game.
Remedies include reversal of a games result or the rescheduling of a game in its entirety or from the point when the act occurred. However, Saints fans may be disappointed by Article 2, which states that, The Commissioner will not apply authority in cases of complaints by clubs concerning judgmental errors or routine errors of omission by game officials. Games involving such complaints will continue to stand as completed.

(16,448 posts)Good grief, it was a horribly blown call not a conspiracy.

(18,101 posts)It was 2 blatantly obvious penalties. Maybe the officials were ordering beer, instead of watching the play.

(18,101 posts)A - The officials weren't looking at the play
B - The officials saw the play, but didn't see any pass interference or a personal foul (helmet to helmet hit)
C - Rigged as fuck

(16,448 posts)Youre the one who is making the case for a conspiracy to rig the game, not me.
Also, if you could include who you think the mastermind of the conspiracy is, how the conspirators determined what point in the game to hatch their plot, and how many conspirators were involved that would be great.

(315 posts)Yeah they weren't talking about this in 2009 when they intentionally went out to injure a QB and were paying money to players to put people out of games. Their puke of a coach was thrown out of football for a year (should have been lifetime) for bounty gate. Not to mention in that game the league had to send a letter of apology for all the terrible calls in the game that cost the Vikings.
Sorry fans but your coach is an absolute piece of garbage. Classless and a disgrace. Remember last year that jackhole mocking VIkings fans right before his team blew it. He was making choke signs at the fans and then the next moment when Diggs strode into the endzone he was out of there like the douchebag he is.
Karma two years in a row for that crap organization. Keep it going.

(33,643 posts)was relatively mild was because once the NFL investigated, they discovered that the practice was pretty widespread ... which led to an 'agreement' being reached with the Saints org and Payton and Williams as the NFL didn't want it becoming known just how common this practice was. Not that this 'makes it okay', but that was 10 years ago, the guys 'did their time', and no reason to think they didn't learn their lesson.
Further, it wasn't 'choke signs' ...

Just sayin, Frank Black

(315 posts)But he was also doing choke signs as well. I will find the pic when I am on a laptop. The more applicable puece though is that year their team benefitted from an unbelievable amount of blown calls. like the pass interference on our LB that wasnt even within 5 yards of the intended receiver.

(315 posts)the choking sign was to the Falcons.
Thank you.

A long time ago...

(11,643 posts)They continued to suspend players for 6 or 8 games for testing positive for smoking marijuana at the same time as they gave other guys 2 games when there were tapes widespread of them beating women unconscious. Not the type of organization I want any of my time or money or emotions associated with.

(2,343 posts)they are just games. Relax. If your well being is dependent on the outcomes of games of your favorite sports team, please re- evaluate your lives. There are far bigger things to be concerned with. Jeez Louise.

(315 posts)fans invest a lot of time and energy into it. If you dont want to do that then dont but it is part of the highs and lows of being a sports fan.

(2,002 posts)This is what you do.
First, the Louisiana AG should announce an investigation into the possible fixing of the game. As part of this, an official "summons" would be sent to the officials(this is Louisiana). Then, the Saints ownership would then find a Saints-friendly District Court judge and file an injunction against the NFL playing the Super Bowl pending the outcome of the investigation(because if it found impropriety, the NFL would have to overturn the results, therefore, NO would be "irreparably harmed" if the game were played ). The suit would ask for an injunction against the game unless the NFL agrees to replay the last 1:49 Thursday night. Let the NFL fight it in court.

(9,070 posts)...at least this year, the college BCS games were pretty evenly called...and no big controversies.
Almost every pro playoff game had some pretty blatant mistakes.
BannonsLiver
(16,448 posts)im not sure what the answer is. I do know that the game has been sped up and there are more rules now than ever before, and I think it has an affect on officiating.

(24,396 posts)was blatantly grabbed near the goal line? That would have given the Rams a first down on the NO one-yard line, which would have probably meant scoring a TD, rather than a field goal.

(3,398 posts)That was two different penalties, and the officials called a total of zero penalties. My football team had the second-worst record this year; I dont have a dog in this race. But every NFL fan should be embarrassed by that call. If the league is smart, someone will lose his job over it, and they will advertise that fact.
Nonetheless, this lawsuit is ridiculous. Its nothing but an emotional reaction, and it has no chance of succeeding. I have to think that the Saints are embarrassed by it.
