Nashville's Martin Luther King Jr. celebration was headlined Monday by a fiery and sometimes adversarial speech by civil rights leader The Rev. William Barber II, calling for leaders to not just love King's legacy but act.
Barber's 50-minute long speech, in front of thousands who marched to TSU's Gentry Center, rallied the audience in support of a bevy of issues that broadly included equality for the poor, better treatment of immigrants, universal health care and a call against restrictive voter laws.
But his speech also stood in contrast to many of the stances of another high-profile speaker in attendance Gov. Bill Lee, who was seated just behind him. Lee is believed to be the first governor to attend the celebration in the event's 30-year history.
"I am not fussing at you, I am saying it is time to put down the partisanship and do what is right," Barber said, turning to look at Lee and other elected officials behind him.

Always telling it like it is. Not hiding behind " the word"
And a fierce fighter for the ordinary man. Just like Jesus would.
I'm non religious. But its amazing to me that there are so many " Religious right" folks - but they are not concerned with the things that Rev Barber speaks out and fight for.
the REAL deal for sure. Ive seen him speak in person. Wow..
