(4,341 posts)And lets hope the orange buffoon does not get away with giving the speech at Congress, it will lift his base, it is a silly and childish thing, but then again so is the buffoon and his followers, nonetheless it is a show of strength and disregard for rules, and walking away from it with no accountability will be a problem for Nancy Pelosi...It will lead for greater disregard of the rule of law.
Right now he is getting away with this shutdown, his goal is to hurt the investigation, nothing else, he sees no consequences to other people, only the benefits for him. He needs to go, and it needs to happen very soon. It should had happen already.

This is fun to watch. Of course, the MAGAts are going call her a b*tch and the c-word and all sorts of things. Nothing new really.

(10,152 posts)like Jefferson and Lincoln did. The Constitution requires the president to inform Congress "from time to time" about the state of the union - it doesn't specify that it has to be in person.

(28,943 posts)The Constitution requires that POTUS "from time to time" inform Congress of the state of the union and make recommendations. Article II, Section 3.
An in person speech to Congress is a tradition, not a requirement. Wilson was the first POTUS to do it. Before that a formal letter was sent.

Wounded Bear
(58,703 posts)it is Constitutionally mandated. She can keep him from delivering it in the House, though.
Article II, Section 3:

(2,294 posts)As she said, he can give his speech from the oval office.
He's just bullying again so he can whine about being locked out, like he did about being alone at Christmas.
Good thing she's not throwing his clothes on the lawn.

(8,344 posts)a video tape, hell, he can tweet the SOTU if that is how he wants to deliver it to Congress. Nothing says he has to show up in the Hall of the House
doompatrol39
(428 posts)And from what that says "time to time" doesn't mandate it be right now during the shut down and it doesn't involve it being televised or in the house. She holds all the cards on this one.

(50,562 posts)It's a very nebulous term, and Trump has already given a couple of them...in theory at least, he doesn't have to give another SOTU the rest of the time he's in the White House.
And as everyone's already pointed out, there's no rule as to HOW the State of the Union has to be delivered. He can do it by letter.

In an email to House officials sent Sunday afternoon, a White House staffer requested a walk-through from the House sergeant-at-arms to prepare for the presidential address next week. The White House asked to visit the House on Monday, which was a federal holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Much of the legislative branch was closed Monday.
Checking on the postponed SOTU walk-through meeting from last week. Given that we have lost valuable time over the past week my team would like to reschedule the walk-through for this Monday, if at all possible, Bobby Peede, the White Houses director of presidential advance, wrote in the email, obtained by The Washington Post. Fox News first reported on the existence of the message. Peede added: We understand that the House Chamber may not be available or be in session and would be happy to meet at any time, day or night. I appreciate all your and the SAAs help and assistance over the years and look forward to seeing you and your team this week.
That walk-through on Monday did not occur. Pelosi canceled a planned walk-through that had been scheduled for Jan. 16, a spokesman said.
On Tuesday night, Pelosi dismissed the note sent to the House sergeant-at-arms as an informal query that went to several hundred people and not a formal request from White House or security officials.

(145,496 posts)There can be no SOTU without a formal resolution. https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/22/white-house-planning-state-of-the-union-1119849
For now, Congress has not approved a joint resolution authorizing an appearance by the president next Tuesday, so there is nothing scheduled for Pelosi to cancel. The resolution would need the support of House Democrats, who have followed taken their lead from Pelosi's lead during the shutdown.

(8,733 posts)She didnt choose not to invite him. She choose not to create more work for people who are already not getting paid and working understaffed (meaning the homeland and other security personal).
This was the only one of the two that saw that such an event is a lot of work to create for people not getting paid.
FYI, I think these things are ridiculous and were not done at all in the first 110 years we existed and then not consistently. Carter was the last president to deliver it in writing in 1981.
Jefferson was the first to start delivering it in writing as he considered the speech before congress to monarchist.
The last thing we need to do is encourage that in this idiot.

(6,205 posts)Speaker Pelosi is now the democrats designate pay back chief.
For these quotes and thousand of other steps you took to obstruct President Obama!
McConnell quotes:
1. The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.
2. One of my proudest moments was when I looked Barack Obama in the eye and I said, 'Mr. President, you will not fill the Supreme Court vacancy.'
