General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe NFL just had a game that was a replay of the 2016 election
one team, the Saints, clearly won, but the Refs gave it to the other team, the Rams.
It was about not calling an obvious pass interference penalty.
Sort of like ignoring voter suppression and Russian interference.

(100,079 posts)Lose 7 games and they're still fucking Super Bowl contenders? GTFO! If they win it will definitely because the refs gave it to them.

(13,871 posts)There are a couple of posters here who really believe in conspiracy theory.
As near as I can tell, the networks or the NFL or the Illuminati decreed that the Saints throw an interception so they would lose the game.

Overtime should never have happened.

(1,900 posts)Didn't anticipate it in the NFL, but there it was with the no-call. LA is a much bigger market than NO.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)The entire state of Louisiana plus much of Mississippi and the entire Gulf coast to mobile are saints fans.
With 3 other teams in California and lots of other sports teams it could be close.
LA sure cant seem to keep a team.
Shitty ending.

(15,286 posts)NO and LA tied at 13-3, turn that NO win into a loss and they don't get home field advantage for the entire playoffs.

(15,286 posts)Add 1 more loss to NO, they are 12-4 vs LA 13-3 and LA get playoff home field advantage, not NO. Further, NO is then tied with Chi at 12-4 records and Bears get a 1st round bye based on their better NFC conference record.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)It wasn't a TD right at the end that was taken from them.
Yes, very likely they win, but not "clearly."
Side note: in the football side of your analogy, I hate the Saints (actually I hate Sean Payton and can't believe he is still allowed to coach after bountygate), so....
edhopper
(33,584 posts)the Saints could have run the clock down to :05 before kicking a FG.
They would have won.

(24,396 posts)Nope. They could have won it in OT. They had the ball and were moving it until Brees threw tHat INT. Refs had nothing to do with that INT.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)So it wasn't "clearly" a win. A very likely win, for sure. There were still things that needed to happen.

(4,921 posts)Guaranteed? Nope. All kinds of crazy crap has happened. That's all I'm saying. It's not like they overturned a winning TD at the end of regulation. That's a guaranteed win.

(21,106 posts)What bothers me the most is that the Saints worked their asses off all year to be in the position they were in. Less than 2 mins left in the game and the game on the line. To have the refs blatantly steal it from them is a disgrace. The refs calling that game should be censured or fined.

(24,396 posts)They could have fumbled. They could have run the clock down and missed the field goal. They had a chance in OT to win it with a TD. They didnt do that.

(24,396 posts)They dont.
It was a bang-bang play that looked like no PI in real time. None of the officials called it. Had one ref called it it would have been reviewed and PI would have been confirmed. But none of them called it so it wasnt reviewable.

(4,921 posts)My wife doesn't like football. She asked why I hated the Saints so much. I said "2009. I'm pissed that Sean Peyton gets to coach in the NFL." She said "Isn't it time to let it go?" I told her I was still pissed about the Cowboys push-off in 1975.

(67,782 posts)....with over a minute to go. Most likely it still would have gone to overtime. I'm a Saints fan (in the NFC), it wasn't a good call, but it probably didn't cost them the game.
Remember, the Saints got the ball first in the overtime. They had every chance to win, but were intercepted.

(19,989 posts)to about 4 seconds and kicked a gimme field goal from inside the 10 yard line.
Polybius
(15,428 posts)Even if they didnt score a TD, by the time they scored the field goal, there would be far more time shaved off. The Rams likely would not have enough time to get close enough to kick.
edhopper
(33,584 posts)they could have run down the clock to 5 seconds before kicking the FG. No time for LA to comeback.

(12,553 posts)The Jets had a TD taken from them on a bad call that could've beat the Patriots.
I cant count the number of times the falcons have had a late game no-call cost them a game.
If the Saints even played close to their normal game, they wouldve won regardless.
