Mueller's office's statement is trying to distance them from being the source of the article

People have already brought up the worry that they might start a serious fight with Trump if it is thought that Mueller's office leaked the info. This is effectively an acknowledgement that they are not the source. The wording of the statement is very soft, and very narrow. It may be that the reporter's info does not EXACTLY match the info Mueller has, while the larger truth of the article remains. Regardless, I doubt they would make any statement at all, despite any information discrepancy, if there wasn't that suspicion that they could have been involved in the leak.

the course that this skankbag would want his minions to lie.

I agree with the wording of the statement. I'm not sure if they are the source of this "leak" though....but of course it's possible.

If he never said anything like that, or if it wasn't true, wouldn't he say so?

I don't believe the SC is the source of this report. Certainly not after they made this statement.
