Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you trust William Barr?
IMO, after he is confirmed as AG of the Justice Dept., he will do everything possible to protect the orange creature.
And who's going to stop him? The Senate is buying the shit he's selling them, and they're going to look pretty foolish if he turns around and does everything possible to get Trump off the hook?
None of us has any way of knowing what Trump/Putin has on him. But the very fact that Trump chose him to be AG should tell us everything we need to know.
Raise your hand if you think this guy should be confirmed.
Raise your hand if you think he can be trusted.
Raise your hand if you think he's not just one more Trump lap dog.

(102,328 posts)GHWBush and the Reagan ilck in Iran contra. Nor is ANYONE else here. The majority of DUers LIVED through that period. We aren't stupid nor have we forgotten.
However, the point is that the staunch Bushies* are NEVER TRUMPERS and thus there is a chance that Barr will thus NOT be a TRUMP sycophantic cover and will actually do what the constitution requires.
That is a weak bit of reassurance granted--and it hardly means any of us are confident he won't screw us all--just that there is a slim chance he's not a 100% Trump toady.

(67,816 posts)It is, indeed, all speculation. People I have no reason to mistrust say they see him as a respected person, not a shill for Trump.
Then there's my post.
Then there's what he has done, wrote, and said over time.
However, I can't make the leap from him protecting GHWB to him protecting the Orange MAGAt.
I really don't know.

(4,667 posts)I think if he was planning to subvert Mueller, he would have equivocated more on the obstruction questions, and Motherfucker would have been less surprised to learn of his relationship with Mueller. I dont think anyone Motherfucker appoints is going to be entirely trustworthy, but I think Barr is the best were going to get under the circumstances.

(5,008 posts)The info Mueller has seems promising but doubt he would seek to indict the creature. He will probably want us to leave it to the voters in 2020. Comey said this is something that she resolved by voters. Pretty sure Mueller will feel the same.

(12,667 posts)I wouldn't be surprised to find out he and Putin are best buds on the down-low - or at least fellow travelers.
His track record shows he doesn't care about justice - he cares about propping up a WASP Plutocracy and destabilizing Democracy for the rest of us.
He's part of the Club, and he has no problems telling the bouncer to keep "the little people" out.

(2,121 posts)being from TN bible belt and knowing this battle against R's. I have email numerous times our Republican reps and Sens. My message has always been same, America needs a hero right now.
Having said that, America's hero will come from the Republican side, I love what Nancy is doing,, but our true American hero will be the one who puts country first.
I am hopeful that Barr hates Trump and is doing this to take him out.
Ok, now I return to reality and out of my make believe world.

(15,046 posts)But in the long run, it won't matter.
The Democratic House can call Mueller to testify in an open, televised session. Barr has no power over the House. It's a different and co-equal branch of government.
Whatever Barr tries to hide will be an exercise in futility. My opinion is that Mueller would testify openly and fully. The contents of his report will be heard by the entire world. It will be Trump's worst nightmare and one he deserves. After all, he's put this country and the world through a nightmare for two years and counting.

(15,046 posts)Iran/Contra resulted in many deaths and an immense flood of drugs into America. Defending these crimes makes Barr a world class criminal who should be in jail with those he "defended" (lied for).
So this prick is going to be our new AG? I guess we're fortunate that Charles Manson is dead. Trump might have pardoned him and then appointed him as new AG.

BUT ... You knew there was going to be a BUT.
Why would any respectable human being on the face of the earth take a job with the Trump circus/administration?
Why would any sane human being do that?
With absolutely no proof at all, I suspect that someone, Trump? Putin? Whoever?, has something on him. And it may be enough to make him take on the job of AG.
Stinky, you're one of the really smart people here. Regardless of Barr's history with Bush, why would he take a job in Trump's sewer? Why would anyone? WHY?
Outside of blackmail, I just can't find a sane or even reasonable answer.

(46,166 posts)Imo, the oligarchs have had enough of us thinking we live in a democracy and they're just taking it a day at a time doing what needs to be done to grow their control. Barr could be reading the writing on the wall and throwing in with the powerful.
What surprises me is that the Russians who suffered so much after WW2 and for decades after sacrificing their day to day lives so their military could grow - have now allowed Putin to amass so much of the nation's wealth for himself and his oligarchs. It's as if they're back to square one. And now a segment of our own population has thrown in with them.
Thank goodness for Pelosi and to everyone who did what they did for last November's success.
Hugs to you and yours, dear friend.
