Happy LEE-JACKSON DAY y'all
Fresh off the holidays Commonwealth of Virginia employees are enjoying a four day weekend.
Today Lee-Jackson Day. Monday Martine Luther King Jr. Day.
Originally created in 1889, Jackson was added in 1904. This is the period that saw a large spike in the monuments going up. Lee's monument on Monument Ave faces South (he survived the war) while Jackson's faces North (his arm is buried separate from the rest of his body- didn't make it).
The story of this holiday tells you a lot about the Ooooold Dominion.
Lee-Jackson Day has been a state holiday for a long time. Banks used to close for it.
The Commonwealth's sad handling of MLK day comes in second to Arizona's where voters twice (I think) said NO! then the NFL players Association said "No MLK, No Super Bowl" and Arizona voters said "Why we'd love to have us a MLK day".
Virginia, at the time true RED, begrudgingly accepted MLK day but joined it with the established Lee-Jackson day to make Lee-Jackson-King Day <--- notice the order. Then powers that be said "Whoa whoa whoa. I say I say, this Mr. King fella won't born in Virginia" and they made a four day weekend. The irony that Stonewall Jackson was born in Clarksburg which is now part of WEST Virginia is notable.
