The play Julius Caesar is weighing on my mind now, especially this from Brutus:

Imo, nobody was better than Shakespeare at depicting both the difficulty and tragedy involved in ridding a country/empire of a dangerous, malignant tyrant. It's not just the horror and violence involved; it also involves factions and internecine conflicts, where some of the people literally don't know who or what they are.
