'Change Is Coming!' Congressional Dems Join Sanders in Proposing Bill to End 'Starvation Wages,' Ensuring $15 Per Hour for All Workers

From the article:

Denouncing the current federal minimum wage as a "starvation wage" which never should have been permitted to be stagnant for the past decade, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was joined Wednesday by several congressional Democrats in introducing legislation to raise the wage over the next five years.

The bicameral Raise the Wage Act would increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 per hour, where it's stood since 2009, to $15 by 2024. The proposal would also bar employers from paying tipped workers below the minimum wage and stipulate future pay increases for low-wage workers to keep up with median wage growth and cost of living.

So when the uninformed and apathetic say that both sides are the same, they need to be reminded that only one party, the Democrats, is standing up.

Few weeks ago my solidly red (ex)boss made a statement that a bunch of states just raised their min wage but ours wasn't one of them. Instead of telling her what went through my mind (if you'd get your head out of your ass and stop voting for people who don't give a shit about you maybe we'd be on that list) I just told her we need to push our representatives into doing so. Hopefully I planted a seed.

Higher wages stimulate the economy. A basic economic fact that the right tries to ignore.

However, I offer this caveat: It's only one aspect we need to consider in offsetting the broader condition of economic disparity. I can see this as disincentive for career advancement. We also need to address the problem with taxes.

Am I being a Debby Downer? I want the complete package, and I want it now!

We as in the 99%.

Demand drives supply. More money for the workers creates more demand.

I can envision an employer reluctantly paying a new hire $15 to start but not wanting to promote that new hire six months later because promotion implies a raise. Then we run into a retention problem. Oh, I don't want to think about it. Just in case it isn't apparent, I am definitely for a $15 minimum wage hike.

And any company that refuses to properly compensate employees runs the risk of losing the better ones.

First we cut taxes to the business' that pay extremely low wages, cause you know, we have to give an incentive to create jobs. Then the taxes collected from "us" get paid to employees of those same business because the employees can't afford to be alive. So not only are "we" paying their share of taxes, we're also paying their employees to make the business wealthy.

It's about damn time people get paid their worth!
