On paper, Dale and Claudia Leary seemed the ideal couple to host foreign-exchange students.
He was a charismatic tech genius, she a longtime elementary school teacher turned administrator. They lived in manicured 4-bedroom Cutler Bay house. In applying to host their eighth student in 2012, they promised family dinners by the pool, trips to the mall and occasional visits to Disney World.
Claudia and I feel that we have a lot to teach and enjoy showing students our cultural differences and encouraging them to try new things, Dale Leary wrote in his application. One of the greatest things we like to share with our students of American life is openness.
But behind the wholesome facade lay a den of perversion. By the time Leary, 50, swallowed a lethal dose of pills in a suicide in July 2017, he had left behind a trail of shattered lives:

(16,646 posts)I'll say it again. If you have ANY kind of program involving children AT ALL, the pedophiles will be looking to get involved. Schools, day care, day camp, after school programs, church based programs, sports programs, heck crossing guards and playground monitors. They will be looking. And they will be very charming and the kids will "love" them. Don't think for a minute that you'll automatically "know". Put in place the rules and procedures to detect them, and deter them.

About 10 years ago an abuse survivor spoke at the university I was working at because she had just written a book about her neighbor in 1980s North Carolina who molested pretty much every kid in his neighborhood, and this was a man with a family of his own... He did it all -- Church deacon, youth ministry, Boy Scouts, organized events for the local elementary school, coached the champion Little League baseball team, every Friday in the summer was "movie night" at his house and every Saturday evening was a backyard cookout/pool party... Of course it goes without saying that it took many years (damn near 20) before parents finally started taking the accusations of their children seriously and the dude got convicted and eventually died in prison.
