of workers under dangerous conditions, job discrimination against women and minorities, denial of voting rights, housing discrimination, etc. The GOP is cognitively stuck in that era.

...that generation began the process of dismantling Jim Crow, saw the greatest concentration of workers in unions in our history, essentially abolished lynching--they were great rarities after the War--and had high marginal tax rates. It was just in this time--1945-65--that most white Americans turned away from racism, especially the subtle form that was totally ingrained in the North, as well as the South, in the 1875-1940 era. A poll in 1949 found that Jackie Robinson was the second most admired man in America, after Bing Crosby. No, they weren't as fully enlightened as we are. But that was my parent's generation, and they worked hard to make America a better place. It was the most liberal generation in our history, with the possible exception of the Civil War era.

were going bankrupt because of the unions. My parents were part of that generation, and I watched them turn from progressives to right wingers. They believed that African-Americans should have been grateful for the changes that were made, and were very angry and scared when riots broke out because the promise of equality just didn't exist for the vast majority of African-Americans. They had supported and loved FDR and they ended up believing that he had given half of the world away to the Soviet Union, and that his socialist programs were a threat to American democracy. They believed MLK was a communist funded by the USSR, and that the anti-Vietnam War protests were, too. I think above all it was the fear of communism that turned them from progressives into Fox News watchers. For all the progressivism of their youth, they ended up blaming unions, liberals, and minorities for everything.
