Bernie Sanders picks a new fight over $15 minimum wage

Bernie Sanders plans to reintroduce legislation this week to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, the liberal Vermont senator announced Monday.

"The federal minimum wage of $7.25 is a starvation wage," Sanders tweeted. "If you work 40 hours a week, you should not live in poverty."

The bill will likely die in Congress even as it gives Sanders a key issue to push on the campaign trail if he runs for president in the 2020 race, as he is widely expected to.

Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, introduced similar legislation 2015 and 2017, but both bills were stalled in Congress. With Democrats now controlling the House, the odds of a similar measure passing that chamber are higher. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has expressed her support of a $15 minimum wage in the past. Yet, Republicans hold a 53-47 advantage in the Senate, which effectively dooms the bill's chances.

wage for years.

Congressional Black Caucus Announces 1,300-Page Bill Calling For Free Tuition At Community College And $15 Minimum Wage
Almost every member of the CBC worked on the bill.

According to NOLA, the bill calls for a $15 minimum wage, two years of free community college, funding to remove lead-contaminated water pipes, abolition of the death penalty and the removal of marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act.

The bill includes legislation from almost all 48 members of the CBC and The National Urban League’s Main Street Marshall Plan. National Urban League CEO and President Marc Morial admitted the bill is up against a hostile administration, but he believes accountability is key to ensuring it gets through Congress.

"We know that many will say that this bill will not see the light of day," said Morial. "But I can guarantee you that the Urban League ... will call the question to each and every one who struts into our community, dances into our community, walks into our community asking for our vote: 'Where do you stand on the Jobs and Justice bill?' I want your name on the dotted line if you want me to pull the lever for you.''

Glad Bernie's doing this, but he's not the only one "leading the way."

not to give proper credit to whomever was first to come up with legislation.. while trying to push that someone else is a "leader".

Not the first time.

If it were only indexed for inflation over the last 50 years it would be about $11-$12 right now, but that doesn't account for a massive increase in worker productivity. So set a target of $15 to hit in 5 years, then index for inflation thereafter.

The minimum wage can be a stimulus to innovation. Labor should not be cheap, in my opinion. Labor efficiency can be improved.

I said this whole discussion of a wall was ignoring the elephant in the room. We NEED the immigrant workers to do the shitty jobs citizens don't want to do. It's not a new thing. Demonizing immigrants isn't new either, but it is WRONG. He said we're addicted to cheap labor, cheap stuff. It's ultimately not good for the economy as a whole and it certainly isn't good for the folks at the bottom.

Yeah, yeah.. "caucuses with the Dems".. even though he accuses our Party of being "the party of the elite".

Sanders: Trump Won Because Democrats Focused Too Much On Wealthy "Liberal Elite"

Sen. Bernie Sanders says the Democrats lost the 2016 election because they ignored working class and low-income voters in favor of wealthy "liberal elites."
