They state that they believe in the Constitution and free speech and open debate...
... and yet they allow the Senate to be held hostages to the whim of one person - and if that person doesn't want something brought to the floor, it doesn't happen. So much for freedom of debate in the Senate.

(2,187 posts)To do a re-imagining of GOP tweets and interview
responses to all of Spankys's actions if Obama or Hillary had committed them! I can only imagine the crying, whining and howling at the moon we'd have been subjected to. It would be so fascinating !

(1,533 posts)He could end the shutdown in 5 minutes, but suddenly, he is against what he was for just weeks ago.
They want to blame it on Pelosi and Schumer, but she was a Congressperson a month ago, and Schumer was a Senator. Today they are a Congressperson and a Senator. Nothing has changed on their part.
The only change is McConnell's flip flop.
When people bring up that $5.7 billion is peanuts compared to the National budget, remind them that it was peanuts to the last Congress as well. The last Congress shut down the government, under total Republican control.

(53,794 posts)The Senate is supposed to be the great, deliberative body but if bills don't get to the floor nothing can be deliberated on. The rules need re-configuring as the Majority Leader totally controls it and the 6-year term makes it nearly impossible to hold him/her accountable unless it close to the term being up.
turtle's is up in 2020 but he's hoping this shutdown issue will be well over and done with by election day.
Maybe their term should be reduced to 4 or even 3 years, the filibuster has to come back, as does the 60 vote threshold, and the 2 senators per every state rule needs adjusting as Wyoming with 2 senators representing only some 600k people has as much heft in the Senate as California with more than 6 times the population at 38m.
