LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) More than four months after Missouri became the first U.S. state to regulate the term meat on product labels, Nebraskas powerful farm groups are pushing for similar protection from veggie burgers, tofu dogs and other items that look and taste like real meat.
Nebraska lawmakers will consider a bill this year to prevent companies that package and sell food from advertising plant-based, insect-based and lab-grown products as meat. Similar measures are pending in Tennessee, Virginia and Wyoming.
The issue strikes a particularly strong cord in Nebraska, one of the nations top states for livestock production, where cars roll down the interstate with Beef State license plates and the governor each year proclaims May as Beef Month.
Farm groups have found an unusual ally in state Sen. Carol Blood, a city-dwelling vegetarian from the Omaha suburb of Bellevue. Blood, who grew up on a farm, said she introduced the measure because agriculture is Nebraskas largest industry and needs to be protected for the good of the whole state.

(22,144 posts)it is made of, and is not misleading to consumers and the like. Some products are kind of confusing to really identify what they are made of, so in a way I support measures like this. It shouldn't require someone w/ 10 degrees and the like to figure out what's really in one's food.
On the other hand, if the legislation is too heavy handed and overwhelms common sense, then I don't support stuff such as this.
Also, beef is up there in price and is too expensive for me to buy on an everyday basis. A little package/steak is $15 dollars! I know pricing is dependent on cut, quality, etc., but still, perhaps Nebraskans can also get the prices down a little for the rest of us, so we can enjoy it a little more, or are you unable to do anything to reduce the price?

(22,144 posts)clearance before they're too old, so I often times look there. If I don't find any beef items that I'm interested in, I don't get freaked out, since if I don't have any beef, I'm doing my health a favor. I'll pick a healthy filet of fish or similar and get.
I've cut way back on consumption of red meats (maybe once a month, and probably less in reality) and thus, helping my health, by limiting my intake of red meats.
