About 100 people gathered outside the Secretary of States office in Columbus Monday morning to show support for two Montgomery County Board of Elections members facing removal for extending the early voting hours for the upcoming election, despite a directive by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.
Dennis Lieberman and Tom Ritchie Sr., the two Democrats on the local board, face firing for declining to adopt the uniform voting hours for the Nov. 6 election set out in Husteds directive. On Friday, Husted suspended Lieberman and Ritchie.
Lieberman and Ritchie were suspended after Lieberman refused to withdraw his motion for weekend hours, claiming the directive failed to specifically address the issue. The board split 2-2 along party lines, sending the issue to Husted.
Within hours, Husteds office office replied with a letter, saying any early voting outside weekday hours listed in his directive would be a violation.
You leave me no choice but to begin the process necessary to remove you as members of the Montgomery County Board of Elections, Husted said in the letter.
