Trump Insists Mexico Will Pay for Wall After U.S. Begins the Work (1/17)

Remember when Trump was screaming it was fake news at the start of his Presidency that US taxpayers would pay for the wall?

WASHINGTON — As congressional Republicans on Friday discussed quickly moving ahead with plans for a southern border wall using money included in this year’s spending bills, President-elect Donald J. Trump insisted that Mexico would ultimately pay for its construction.

“We’re going to get reimbursed,” Mr. Trump said during a brief telephone interview. “But I don’t want to wait that long. But you start, and then you get reimbursed.”

The congressional Republicans’ talk led to speculation that Mr. Trump was retreating on his campaign promise to make Mexico pay for the wall. Mr. Trump insisted he is not.

Republicans have balked at increases in domestic spending during the Obama administration and are unlikely to enthusiastically rally behind a proposal that could require billions of taxpayer dollars.

that he sounded like a kid running for Jr. High president.
Now he sounds like a kid that got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and he's trying to plead his way out of a spanking (oh, wait, come to think of it, he might like the "spanking" part..... ).

My first instinct is to not believe tRump.

There is nothing in the agreement indicating that Mexico is going to pay for his wall, so go with your first instinct!!!

USCMA is a trade deal that sets ground rules for how Mexico, Canada, and the US conduct business. It has nothing to do with any government to government payments. Trump is a liar and/or he has NO idea what a trade agreement actually is. That said, Trump is the idiot that put forth the argument that "the US will get back the money for the wall from Mexico through trade." Think about it for a minute, a second actually. Does the US actually physically trade with Mexico? Do government agents meet along the border and trade goods? The answer to both questions is NO. Companies based in the US trade with companies based in Mexico, those companies are privately owned and their trade is based on the framework in USCMA. It sets certain limits, certain expectations, and a legal framework with which to resolve disputes.

If the trade situation is improved, that means that those private businesses that trade with Mexico and Canada will benefit. Ultimately the US economy will benefit, but it does not mean AT ALL that Mexico will pay for the wall. How will the US extract that money from Mexico? It won't, it will extract that money from the private US businesses that maybe are making more profit. So, that means taxes from US companies will still fund any wall, not Mexico.

Trump is a liar and you shouldn't need to rely on your instinct not to believe him. All evidence in the last 2 years clearly indicates that Trump has no understanding of how trade, economics, foreign policy, or government works, and that he lies constantly.
