President Trump said Thursday he never meant Mexico was "going to write a check" when he said repeatedly that the nation would pay for a border wall.
When during the campaign, I would say 'Mexico is going to pay for it.' Obviously, I never said this and I never meant they are going to write out a check, Trump said.
I said they are going to pay for it.
Speaking outside the White House to reporters before leaving to visit the border, Trump said Mexico would be paying for the proposed wall through a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada, which has yet to be ratified.
They (Mexico) are paying for it with the incredible deal we made, he said. "So, Mexico is paying for the wall indirectly and when I said Mexico will pay for the wall in front of thousands and thousands of people they are paying for the wall indirectly.

(37,748 posts)The Trump campaign released a document which is still online* in which it explained how Mexico would finance the project. The document explicitly described a plan in which Mexico would make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion, which the Trump administration would compel the country to make.

(4,443 posts)why spend it on a wall when it could be going for education, health care, infrastructure, etc? You know, things this country actually needs and would benefit from having.

(11,740 posts)It just shows that Trump has no understanding of trade or economics and/or that he is a complete liar. Unless Mexico pays for the wall directly, they will never pay for the wall. There is no "indirect" paying for the wall. Any benefits from the trade deal will be experienced directly by the companies that engage in trade with Mexico. Yes, the economy may benefit in general if the deal increases sales and more people are employed, but basically the money is coming from the taxes levied on US citizens and residents.
Trump shows both his stupidity and his mendacity in his continued focus on his racist wall.
