Still In Wisconsin
(4,450 posts)If Whitaker was all that great of a tight end for the Hawks, I'd remember more about him than just his name.

(9,186 posts)Whitaker was a backup, primarily to Alan Cross, although he did start the 1991 Rose Bowl. He caught a total of 21 passes, including 2 TDs in a three year career.

(4,450 posts)I remember him...played for Iowa in the couple of years before Alvarez won his first Rose Bowl at Wisconsin. I was a student at UW then and made the trip to Kinnick in 1992 to see you guys beat us by a point. We didn't beat Iowa for something like fifteen years... Hayden Fry owned us.
Cheers from across the river. My middle daughter is looking at Iowa for college next year. We'll still love her even if she DOES become a Hawkeye!

(9,186 posts)My brother and sisters went to UNI. My daughter and son-in-law went to UNI. He works for Iowa State. I went to law school at Drake. And I'm STILL a Hawkeye fan!
I watched the Outback Bowl on New Years Day as the Hawks squeaked past Mississippi State. The color guy kept saying Ferentz had turned the Iowa program around. I kept thinking, "Remember Hayden Fry? HE turned the program around!"
My last high school football game was played against Mason City, Iowa. It was Barry Alvarez's first game as their head coach. They beat the hell out of us. I suspect they would have done so even if the school hadn't been three times our size.

(4,450 posts)Hayden Fry IS Iowa football to me.
By the way I know as a Badger I'm not supposed to say things like "I like Kirk Ferentz" but I do. He's all class and keeps Iowa competitive year in and out. Like Wisconsin, you've had a few near misses where you legitimately could have won a national title. Ours was '93- only loss of the season to lowly Minnesota.

(9,186 posts)The run offense will be stretch zone. Tight ends are utilized strongly in the passing attack, because there is never a real deep threat. The defense is a base 4-3, with a zone defense, and very few blitzes.
Big Ten teams can take the game plan from 10 years ago off the shelf, and be fully prepared. When Iowa executes they win. When they don't, they lose. Green Bay under Lombardi had the same philosophy, but they executed far more consistently.

(7,939 posts)matthew Whitaker, the acting U.S. Attorney General, has incorrectly claimed on his résumé and in government documents to have been named an Academic All-American while playing football at the University of Iowa, according to the documents and the organization that awards that honor.
Barb Kowal, a spokeswoman for the awarding organization, also known as CoSIDA, said the group has no record that Mr. Whitaker was ever an Academic All-American.
