House votes to reopen Treasury Dept., IRS

The Democratic-led House approved a bill Wednesday to reopen the Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service and Small Business Administration, among other federal agencies.

The chamber voted 240-188 to advance the measure, with eight Republicans bucking party lines to back the bill, which is the first of four bills expected to be brought to the floor by Democrats.

The Republicans who voted to advance the measure Wednesday included Reps. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.), Will Hurd (Texas), Fred Upton (Mich.), John Katko (N.Y.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Greg Walden (Ore.), Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) and Herrera Beutler (Wash.).

Senate Republicans assert they will not take up any spending legislation to end the partial shutdown unless President Trump has agreed to sign it.

The Democrats can now say they tried to at least get a few million people their tax refunds, on which many were counting to eat and pay rent. The Congressional Democrars knew in advance the Republicans would say no. But now they are forced to say it publicly and specifically to the faces of their constituents they are hurting most.

3. Or the GOP and Trump calculate that this means they can now pick and choose as needs arise ...

It would look worse for Trump if people can't get their refunds than it would for Democrats. Ergo, Trump/GOP actually might NOT ... say 'no' on this one.

This bill, and doing things piecemeal, could set up a scenario where Trump can decide 'oh, yeah, lets fire up the IRS again, I'll accept that, too many are being hurt, I'll compromise on this!', whilst conversely it'll be 'Oh, the EPA? yeah, no ... Not an emergency, I'm not going to agree to your funding that w/o my WALL!'.

And the next thing you know, everything HE WANTS back up and running (because it makes HIM look good) ... will be funded again, and us Dems are left with nothing to bargain with ... except the agencies/functions WE care about ...

down this road ...

Didn't mean to imply it was 'planned' by The Mad King. Though he is capable of calculating 'methods' to get what he wants. It's kinda the only 'skill' he has, actually ... along with the closely related skill of manipulating utter dumbshits ... dude is nothing if not an opportunist, let's be real.
