Stephen F. Freind (born 1945) is a Republican politician who was elected as a Representative in the Pennsylvania Legislature representing Delaware County from 1976 until 1993, when he unsuccessfully challenged Arlen Specter in the 1992 Republican Senate Primary. He was most notable for authoring a law designed to restrict abortion rights, that included "requirements that a married woman notify her husband, that there be a 24-hour wait before any abortion, and that doctors show patients a pamphlet with pictures of developing fetuses".[2][3] It was mostly upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States except for the spousal notification provision in the case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey.[4]

In 1988, Freind provoked controversy by claiming that it is 'almost impossible' for a woman to become pregnant through rape, as it causes her to 'secrete a certain secretion, which has a tendency to kill sperm'.[5]

10. This whole shameful episode brought back a very unpleasant memory

of a seventh grade teacher who went on and on in class about how black people would always beat white people in sport because they had "special muscle structure" that allowed them to be faster and have better endurance. That's why they were better for manual labor. White people had better developed brains and could be doctors and lawyers. Then she paused after quite a bit more of that sort spiel, looked around and said, "Oh, we don't have any in here do we? N--rs?"

I almost fell out. She ran her mouth then ended that display of ignorance with the N-bomb and looking around the classroom as an afterthought.

There I sat, the mellungeon kid, knowing I was "different", a little too dark to be lily-white, way too light to be black, not quite indian enough to be Native, totally mortified a grownup would talk like that, let alone in public, let alone a teacher at that. I remember burning in shame for not fitting anywhere already, worse at that moment. I wasn't raised to talk like that and until that moment I thought teachers and people of authority had enough "raising" not to speak that way in public no matter how they spoke in their own homes. Mom's idea of protecting me from the evil of the world did little to prepare me for it.

I told mom about it and she said there would always be ignorant people and to hold my head up anyway. Everything that went before me went into the making of ME and that's pretty damn special. And no, there's little use in trying to fix stupid, especially when it's arrogant and wilful.

That was a long time ago. The thing that saddens me is that I see things have improved rather little since.
