This is the Great Wall of China. It took 500,000 soldiers and 500,000 conscripts nearly 22 centuries to build it. It was built on the border between China and Mongolia. It was built to keep the Mongols out of China.
This is Kublai Khan. The first MONGOLIAN EMPEROR of China. Got any OTHER bright ideas, Donald?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Great_Wall_of_China
The history of the Great Wall of China began when fortifications built by various states during the Spring and Autumn (771476 BC) and Warring States periods (475221 BC) were connected by the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, to protect his newly founded Qin dynasty (221206 BC) against incursions by nomads from ...
By the way 771 BC to 206 BC is 565 years, not 22 centuries. Although the original wall was enhanced
as recently as 1944 AD.
"Especially famous is the wall built in 220206 BC by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Little of that wall remains. The Great Wall has been rebuilt, maintained, and enhanced over various dynasties; the majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty (13681644)."

I guess they're afraid it'll make them look like smart-ass librul eggheads! "History is for libtards!"

Thus started the Qing dynasty.
This was after the Mongols ... around 17th century CE

(11,949 posts)And it truly is. A marvel of engineering.
But then I looked north, toward the mongol kingdom it was designed to keep out. And I saw a huge ass mountain range and realized; any army on horseback that made it over those mountains would be over the 50 foot wall by morning break.
Come to find it was mainly built to distract the population about the horrors of the emperor. Huh.

(1,969 posts)Just like Trump's wall.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)Actually it did more than distract them. Half the country was forced to slave away in the wall. Either directly or to support the effort.
But the point remains. It was political.
History repeats cause humans are humans.
