Joe Manchin Goes Full George Costanza Trying to Avoid Calling Out Trump: Its Not a Lie, If He Believes itby Joe DePaolo | Jan 8th, 2019, 9:29 am
Its not a lie, if you believe it.
That was the philosophy of iconic Seinfeld stooge and pathological liar George Costanza. Tuesday on MSNBC, that very maxim was put into practice in real life by a United States Senator who was trying to avoid calling out the President.
Appearing on Morning Joe, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) practically twisted himself into a pretzel so as not to concede that President Donald Trump is lying in order to secure funds for a Southern border wall.
Morning Joe co-host Willie Geist put the question to Manchin directly.
Senator, is the president lying to justify this wall?
Oh, Manchin said, giggling. I guess everyone has a right to if he believes it. Im sure if he believes-
Geist interjected. But as you say its a fact and its not true, the co-host said. So is he lying?
If its a fact, its not true, Manchin said. And if youre not telling the truth, then you have to be lying, okay? But the bottom line is, if he believes it in his heart and soul, until he finds someone that verifies or validates what hes saying. But weve got to work off the same set of facts. And the facts right now are not verifying whats being said, and the president, what hes calling, as far as the national emergency.
Worth noting: Lead Seinfeld character Jerry put Georges advice to work during an episode in which he took a lie detector test.
He flunked.
