Mitt Romney's presidential campaign said late Sunday night that "Gov. Romney and Rep. Ryan disagree with Mr. Akins statement." Rep. Todd Akin's (R-MO) on Sunday claimed that women who are victims of "legitimate rape" have biology that prevents them from getting pregnant.
"A Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," the campaign said in a statement confirmed by TPM.
Akin walked back his comments after a firestorm Sunday. Ryan, Romney's running mate, has said in the past he opposes abortion even in the case of rape and incest.

Ryan and Akin largely agree when it comes to abortion rights. Both believe abortion should be illegal even in the case of rape and incest. Both were co-sponsors of H.R. 3, the 2011 bill that would have limited the federal abortion coverage exemption only to victims of forcible rape and women whose physical health was in danger from her pregnancy, closing a supposed loophole in health-of-the-mother exemptions conservatives have been crowing about for years.
After massive vocal protest from womens rights advocates, the sponsors dropped the forcible rape language from the bill, giving up their quest to redefine rape in the federal code with little explanation.

(6,671 posts)My sister posted Akin's comments on Facebook in disgust and one of her right-wing friends posted that women should not be allowed to have an abortion in case of rape. I assume my sister's FB friend was planning to vote for R/R ... I posted the whole R/R statement that they disagree with the fringe extremists and that R/R said that women should be able to have abortions in case of rape.
R/R were working so hard to attract the fringe, hard-core right-winger extremists ... I wonder if my sister's FB friend will still vote for them now
