Mulvaney: Trump offering to take concrete wall 'off the table'

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said President Trump has moved away from his desire for a concrete wall along the U.S.-Mexico border toward a plan for metal fencing instead, which he said indicates how the president is working to compromise with Democrats.

In an interview set to air Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Mulvaney says that the president has shown a "willingness" to compromise with Democrats to reopen the government, which has remained partially closed for 15 days.

"[The president] was willing to agree, and he mentioned this at the Rose Garden press conference, to take a concrete wall off the table," Mulvaney tells NBC's Chuck Todd in the interview.

"If that is not evidence of our willingness to solve the problem," Mulvaney continued. "Because again, what's driving this is the president's desire to change the conditions at the border. And if he has to give up a concrete wall, replace it with a steel fence in order to do that so that Democrats can say, 'See? He's not building a wall anymore'" that should help us move in the right direction."

They’ve made a fat living by fomenting fear and rage, and by turning Americans against one another. They (and the rest of their false-equivalency, mock-outrage-spreading media ilk) are a big part of the reason for the incredible mess the country is in today.

Utterly useless, but extremely destructive. In another era, they’d be hanged.

Uh, nope.

What's driving this is Spanky McShithole's desire to have a lasting monument to his own self-perceived greatness - such as it is.

If the Dems offered him $10 billion for the wall - on the condition that it be labelled and known as the Barack Obama Wall, or the Hillary Clinton Wall - he'd lose interest in the whole idea of a wall within two minutes.

People like Mulvaney should restrict their remarks to FOX-News programs, where the Walking Brain-Dead actually swallow this kind of bullshit.

Trump is using this wall position to lock out 800,000 government employees, control the media cycle and, in my opinion, attempt to starve government agencies of resources to investigate him.

I agree that business interests will start to become more vocal as their bottom line is affected.

The probes into his corruption will continue though...

His supporters WILL NOT abandon him over this. What are they gonna do? Embrace the meanie Democrats who forced him to open the government despite his heroic stand that even included --egads-- staying in the White House versus vacationing in Morbid Lago?

This will end when some Republican Senator or some aide convinces him that he will be a hero for reopening the government.

Right now the Democrats hold all the cards. Her first day holding the gavel Pelosi passed a spending bill without funding for the wall that duplicates legislation that passed the Senate unanimously last session. Now it's clear the only people who want the government to remain shut down are Donnie Two Scoops and the Turtle...and probably Putin, who's evilly rubbing his hands with glee at the United States falling apart. It's turning out so much better than he planned.

Democrats Strong!

which is why I don't really understand them excoriating him the way they did in the first place. Even though they got him to to reject the Senate bill without the wall money, they had to know the end game to their madness was going to lead to the same result - no wall money. And when that happens, how do they turn around and rationalize with the base that its now okay for Trump to accept a resolution that still provides no wall money? Because I don't think they can abandon him without also losing themselves.

He knows this is his last big stand. He HAS to have the wall.

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211627197

National Emergency now, is it? Yes it is to Trump. My take on the last 2 weeks.

As I have posted before - he backed himself into a corner and knows this is it

He's negotiating against himself at this point. It's gone from wall/Mexico to USMC (formerly NAFTA) will pay for it to steel slats to "years" (trying to strongarm with time) to this emergency thing today. He - the White House - thinks or knows that at this point he HAS to win this. He has not choice buuuut as I said he is negotiating with himself. Nancy and Chuck are just sitting there letting him take credit for the shutdown and letting him argue/counteroffer with himself.

No empathy of course but you are seeing a self caged animal scratching and clawing to the point of self abuse.

My post from Dec. 23rd
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211583123

Then Mara Liasson was on. Granted some of this comes from the White House but she made two interesting points:
1. The administration doesn't think Trump will suffer any politic fallout from the shutdown.
and then this...
2. For his base the wall is is vital and they take it very literally. According to her sources in the White House/Trumpians they don't think he can get re-elected if he doesn't get the wall.

We will build an invisible wall along the border and have the invisible jet fighters run sorties along it 24/7.

He'll go crazy if he keeps it up. I hope Pelozi just lets him have enough rope to hang himself.
