During the televised portion of his cabinet meeting on Wednesday, President Donald Trump delivered a bizarre rant about how the war in Afghanistan led to the collapse of the Society Union which has been widely mocked by American journalists and historians, including even the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board.
Trump falsely claimed that Russia invaded Afghanistan because terrorists were going into Russia and literally they went bankrupt as a result.
On Friday, MSNBCs Brian Williams brought up Trumps retelling of history with two experts, former FBI assistant director for counterintelligence Frank Figliuzzi and Gen. Barry McCaffrey (Ret.).
Its an astonishing assertion by the president, said McCaffrey. It sounds as if the talking points are written by the GRU This is a truly astonishing, ignorant statement by the president.

In the article: "Watch the segment below." With an embedded link to the MSNBC clip.
So I'm wondering who would be confused about the source.
And I'm suspecting you watched the whole thing by clicking on the link. So MSNBC got whatever your click on their link is worth.
I just don't get the Raw Story hate around this place. It's a news digest. It always credits and links to the sources for the original stories.

(58,724 posts)Not to MSNBC itself - so they don't get the click.
There is nothing on the page that actually links to the MSNBC website.
That's the way Raw Story operates.

In this case, it appears that rawstory linked to a youtube repost. (How, Oberliner, do you know it's pirated? I mean, I know you know all this stuff, so you must be right. I'm just curious.)
Be that as it may, the clip kinda says "MSNBC Live" down in the lower right hand corner, so I bet a lot of people didn't think it was a rawstory original. But maybe I'm too perspicacious.
Honest, though. What's your hate thing with rawstory. Contrary to what you say, they don't plagiarize. So what is it? They push a lot of news out that I'd never see otherwise.
I understand it's different for you. You seem to be amazingly plugged in to the news, especially a particular kind. So maybe you never see something on rawstory you'd never otherwise see.
But your rawstory obsession really puzzles me.

(58,724 posts)In my observation, they basically slightly paraphrase other people's reporting, add a clickbait headline, and work to generate hits to their ad-filled site instead of the actual journalists in question. In some cases, like this one, they will literally just transcribe an exchange from MSNBC or CNN and then include their own clip of the video hosted on their YouTube page. This behavior rubs me the wrong the way, and I feel like they are poaching from the folks that are actually doing the work.

(2,833 posts)Link me to a story on rawstory that doesn't credit the source. This story isn't one. There's no way for a reader to believe that this is original rawstory content.
You may be able to do it, but I'll be surprised.
Contrary to your belief, summarizing a story with proper accreditation is not plagiarization.
I understand that rawstory rubs you the wrong way. Your claim (not in this thread, but in plural prior ones) that rawstory plagiarizes rubs me the wrong way.
It's a word with actual meaning. And you misuse it.
I'm really curious why it is that you have such a rawstory vendetta.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)Plagiarizing was not the right word to use and I have stopped doing so.

(2,833 posts)The question remains. What is your rawstory vendetta?

(57,106 posts)A lot of us don't bother to use rawstory, but we don't feel any need to bray on about it. And yeah, I know he was asked. Basically it boils down to a simple : "I don't like it." He ought to try running with that.
You do know that the original sources are ad filled, too, right?

(2,833 posts)Other aggregators do the selfsame thing. Alternet, for one. Talking Points Memo does it, to a lesser extent.
But we do not see repeated complaints about those, or any other outlets.
So I'm still wondering what the specific beef is with Rawstory.
And I'm still not clear what the big problem is as long as the material is properly attributed.
Rawstory never does more than a capsule summary. If you want the whole story, you have to click through to the source. So (except in this particular instance, I guess) Rawstory is driving traffic to the original sources.

(81,322 posts)Raw Story seems to be a relaying mechanism. They take other peoples stuff, say who/where/what its from, and relay quotes accurately.
That theyre not generating original stuff is a different matter.
I used to subscribe to Truthout and theyd do that, too. But they also had Jason Leopoldo on staff and he tried to go out and dig up stuff on his own and sometimes did amplify a current story with new original angles. For example, he had kkkarl rove going in and out of the Justice Department answering questions in an effort to maneuver away from being indicted as, I think, the WMD story was falling apart (if memory serves). Nobody else had that, and no bigger outfit ever confirmed it, that I recall, anyway. I think we ALL would have heard more about that one if anybody could have confirmed it. But Truthout ran with it. Will Pitt used to be on there with opinion pieces too.
I no longer subscribe to them. I quit after getting fed up with their nonstop aggressive slamming of HRC and relentless attempts to force-feed a different candidate down my throat during the 2016 primary season.
Jason Leopold eventually stopped working there. After nobody picked up on his rice reports, I dont know if he got fired or what, but he disappeared from their feed. Hes since turned up at Buzzfeed as a senior investigative reporter.

(19,565 posts)I use adblocking (due to aggressive ads and being on a limited data plan) and rawstory blocks all content because of that. Thus, I despise rawstory as a source.
Even a headline would be fine. I can find it from that.
I use Adblock Plus. When I click on the rawstory link in the OP, it displays unproblematically, without ads, and lets me view the MSNBC clip without any trouble. It doesn't even ask me to white list.

(19,565 posts)It's been like this for months now. I'm not being a stinker. I just wanted to know what's going on.
ETA: I'm mobile, so maybe it's different? I use Crystal, which actually blocks all ads and doesn't allow tracking you.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)It links to a pirated YouTube version of the video - not affiliated with MSNBC.
That's what makes Raw Story such a garbage website.

(5,124 posts)I'm still amazed that he still has anyone left that buys his bullshit. I get why politicians and the rich do. As Elizabeth Warren so eloquently pointed out a few nights ago on Rachel, all the roll backs, judges, etc, that he's putting in place helps them keep their status quo and lines their pockets. They get rich at the expense of the rest of us. Therefore, they are willing to put up with this buffoonery. As for the poor, and working class Trump fans, I don't get it. When are they going to wake up? He campaigned on America First. But all I keep seeing is Russia First.

It is not a big stretch. Trump is a traitor as president for the first time in our history and we cannot begin to know how this traitor has given information over to his master.
