Want A Real Wall - The Greater Wall
Not some trumped up steel slat, barbed wire, ugly dumb wall. Im pretty sure the only thing driving the conversation in Washington is the fact that China has a Great Wall and we dont.
It wouldnt be built for security, as almost everyone agrees that it wouldnt do much in that regard. Just ask Genghis Kahn about that. But, why not build it for fun? Just because we can!
I want to see an even Greater Wall, made with real faux stone block, the old style wall like we see in movies, with a road on top that goes from the Gulf to the Pacific - with restaurants, bars and night clubs, all along the route - with two-way welcome centers and visitors coming from all over the world just to see it. Watch & Observation towers would be dotted along the route. Small towns would spring up over night at all the gates and entrances going both ways.
It would become the motorcycle ride of a lifetime, with rest areas and vista points for photographers, and picnic areas for travelers. Throw in a few tunnels just for a change of scenery especially where pedestrian traffic would want to be walking along the wall in already established cities like El Paso.
Think of it! Who wouldnt put it on their bucket list? Economies would be bursting on both sides of the border - Everybody would be happy (except maybe some ranchers whose land it would have to be built on)! But those same ranches would become small towns and villages - theres some incentive there. Not much, but some.
It took China hundreds of years to build their wall. Its so old its crumbling in places. We could build ours in a decade. We need a new wall built in the old style with the latest technological improvements. In Sicily, Italy, they built a highway that is partly elevated, so local sheep wouldnt have to cross it, they just go underneath, keeping the old sheep trails as they were. Good idea.
Imagine driving along through the winding hills of the Big Bend country, over looking The Rio Grande! And even though Mexico wouldnt end up paying for it, we know whos going to end up building it. Come to think of, The Greater Wall would be such an economic boon, Mexico might well end up splitting the bill.
In short, this 2,000 miles of fun would become one of the wonders of the world. Im already wondering just in anticipation.
